Liberty Safes are Great. I ride the short bus.

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Make sure you press the # sign after punching in the numbers of your combo.

24 hours later and not one of you offers to come get me out of the safe. You're all fired.

I decided on the electronic lock after looking at the pros and cons of the dial vs. electronic mechanisms. My buddy and I bring it to my place and the first thing I do is remove the battery in it and replace it with a fresh battery of my own, and then we unlock-open and close-lock the safe several dozen times. Certain we have ourselves a winner, I load all my zombie repellent into the safe and lock it down for the night. I decided not to change it from the standard "1-2-3-4-5-6" factory combination, saving that task for the next day.

The next day comes, and the safe won't open. It reads as a correct combination, but it sounds like the bolts are binding. So I followed the troubleshooting guide and make sure the safe handles are directly amidships so they're not binding, and I push the door a tad up as per the instructions to make sure that's not binding. None of that works.

Inexplicably, the safe does in fact open about 1/3 of the time. Then about 1 in every 10 attempts. Then, not at all. And your humble Idiot Without a Village doesn't take the opportunity to leave it open and call a service person. No, this brain surgeon waits until the safe stops operating entirely to realize he needs Paddle-comma-For Shit Creek-comma-1 each.

This is where things get really bad. By bad, I mean that there is a fornicated pooch on my doorstep, and the evidence all points to me.

The troubleshooting guide says that if the bolts bind, one ought to use graphite lubricant on the bolts to ease opening. Since the safe won't open, I spray some into the small crevice between the wheel and the safe door. It still won't open, of course, but then I see a hex-head nut that holds the wheel onto the door. I remove the bolt, spray graphite lubricant into that mechanism, and set myself to the task of putting the wheel back on. Easy as pie.

Yeah, not so much. I bound the nut, and nicely stripped the top 1/4" of the nut. Now I'm worried that they're going to use this as an excuse to tell me I screwed up the safe. I called Sam's Club and they said they're going to call up the manufacturer and see if a technician will come out. They said I could've just returned it except that my guns and ammunition are all trapped inside.

Fornicate a mallard.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Pros to the electronic lock? My mechanical lock and the safe in general have given me zero issues since I've had it. (knock on wood)

My S&G electronic lock has also given me zero issues with it and also gave me the flexibility of giving various family members their own combo to the safe so they can get their stuff out without compromising MY combo security. When my brother's wife decided to go sideways and start stealing stuff from their house and pawning it for drug money, I simply deleted their combination from the lock. Sometime later on, I'll give him a new combination.

Besides the changing/master combination thing, we can also open the safe in less than 5 seconds and in low light (almost no light) levels too. In the 8+ years I've had the safe, I only recently had to change the battery (quick and easy - no problems). Just remember, whenever you're doing any kind of maintenance on the lock or changing the combos, ALWAYS do so with the door OPEN.

While you're waiting for them to get back to you, try a new battery even though you just replaced it. You might be surprised to find it working again. Does your lock have one or TWO batteries - mine has two. Did you replace both batteries?

Back when I thought I forgot the combo to my safe after deployment, one of the suggested fix-its was to put in the combo, and give the door a slight whack with a large rubber mallet. It was supposed to help dislodge any stuck bolts. That wasn't the problem for my scenario, but it did make me feel better, whacking away at the door.

Advice to RTFM presumes than the FM isn't in the safe.

I believe that's why it says in GREAT BIG LETTERS to NOT PUT THE MANUAL IN THE SAFE.

FM is in-hand, and all troubleshooting techniques listed therein have been tried.

You know, that's a darn funny idea. I think I'll try to reset the lock and see what happens.

Back in a bit, boys.
