Jeep SJ, XJ, or GM k5 project truck? Others maybe?

Unless your towing, which I didn't see on the list, this should be enough power if you get the turbo diesel.

The REAL drawback isn't power, it is that those engines were never in a vehicle imported to the US. They're very uncommon here.
You basically buy a front clip imported from overseas and swap the drive train from it into a 4runner with a blown motor.
You're going to have to import parts, not be able to find a mechanic and if you have emissions checks, well, aint happening.
Oh and is any Toyota really fun?

My benchmark for durability is what do they use in the ass end of nowhere. Outback, Afghanistan, Fiji, etc.

Toyota is number one for rugged general purpose 4x4. I was on my way to buy one but got distracted by the VW Tuareg. It is popular in the outback, just not as much as the Toyota. I felt it is a reasonable compromise especially as it is fast and handles well, all while being luxurious. It's a Porsche Cayenne without the pretension and a better transmission. They make one in Diesel too.

Sorry for the thread jack, just get her a UniMog and call it good.

Someone said Unimog?

If I wanted or needed a big truck / 4x4, I'd also buy a Land Cruiser. If I wanted a small, cheap 4x4, a Lada Niva (seriously).

How can you not like something called a Krankenwagen?

Man, I want a Lada now, especially as it has successfully been driven underwater.

Toyotas aren't without their weak points, either, and I've never cared for the way they drive (just personal taste). No matter what you end up going with, plan on considerable rework.

ETA: Also, if anything, land cruisers are an even bigger rust trap than CJs.

I'm seriously thinking about buying a good used one. It would almost be cheaper than renting a 4x4 for the few times a year that I need one.

Everyone needs a 4x4, you can call it a bug out truck if it makes it easier to justify.

Well I still stand by my recommendation of a second gen Trooper(although the info I posted in the comments on your blog were wrong concerning which diesels swap in).

Also I don't know about stainless for bumpers and winch mounts. It seems like it would be a bit hard and brittle for that use(pretty sure there is a reason chro-moly is used for cages and chassis on race cars). There are almost chrome like powder coatings that could be used however.
