Tools Still Made in the USA?

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Good tools, on the whole. Way more than I like to spend on tools, but the quality is top-shelf.

Great!

I don't think I've seen any Armstrong tools. Are they worthwhile? Where do I find them?

Very high quality. Made by the same company that makes/made Craftsman. You can find a dealer locator here. I know em pretty well, I work for a distributor, but I don't shill around here if I can avoid it.

Thanks. Looks like there are plenty of places in my neck of the woods. I like to know about these kinds of sources for those occasions when I need to get some kind of strange tool in a hurry.

Like the time I needed a 1/2-inch drive 36mm impact socket.

I prefer to buy quality tools if I can. They just work better. I also like knowing alternatives to Craftsman since Sears is currently on My List (R).

I'm getting to the point where I'm not sure it matters. I bought a Bernz-O-Matic torch (made in USA) this week that lacked a hole in the snout for the gas to come out. An entire process was missed and QC apparently never caught it.

Happily enough Aco Hardware was pleased to take it back for refund with no receipt. They were as shocked as I was...

The Channel-lock pliers I see in the stores still say they're made in the US. Vise Grip moved to China a few years ago but you still see the odd older piece made here on the hook at the hardware store.

Recently picked up a set of curve-jaw Vise Grips at the family hardware store in Corvallis; it was the last one on the rack that was still made in USA

Funny, my grandfather once traded in a hammer at Sears that he bought in 1920, becuase the handle had finally broke. They told him to keep it and just gave him one. That was a memorable trip to the store with my gramps.

Also, I manufacture very high quality parts in China and the quality is better than I can get here by a long shot. It's not that they can't, its often that they won't...

That's the problem -- it's becoming much more of one now that their junk is creeping into industrial stuff -- it's become very difficult to find motors and pumps, etc which "can't" break. -- the kind where you keep spares on hand to be able to swap it out as fast as possible.

That, and that no one carries inventory anymore.
