Teacher Mauled to Death by Wolves in Alaska

Post by 308Mike »

Linkarooni - since she was rather small, it's understandable why she might look like prey to a couple of large wolves, especially since she was a runner - making her probably thin as a rail and weighing very little. Even if I was going for a jog up there, I'd have something to protect myself, particularly if I was going running in a rural area.

If you were going to be armed and jog, what kind of holster would you use? I'd probably want something that held it VERY snugly against my chest, or near my right kidney.
Teacher Mauled to Death by Wolves in Alaska

Friday, March 12, 2010

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A teacher jogging along a rural Alaskan road was killed in an animal attack and authorities say wolves are the chief suspects.

The body of Candice Berner, 32, was found Monday off the road a mile outside the village of Chignik Bay on the Alaska Peninsula, which is about 474 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Authorities said the body had been dragged off the road to the village's lagoon and was surrounded by wolf tracks.

In an autopsy report Thursday, the Alaska State Medical Examiner listed "multiple injuries due to animal mauling" as the cause of death for Berner, a special education teacher originally from Slippery Rock, Pa., who began working in Alaska in August.

The autopsy could not say which animals, said Col. Audie Holloway, head of the Alaska State Troopers, but wolves are the chief suspect.

"There's no other carnivores in that area that are out and active," he said.

Wolves, bears, foxes and other wildlife have disturbed bodies in the Alaska wilderness, but Holloway said the autopsy ruled out other causes that may have killed Berner. Additional tests could tie the death to wolves, Holloway said.

"If we're able to actually prove which animal, it will be through some kind of DNA analysis or through some expert that can maybe testify or explain how they know that it's a wolf," he said.

Troopers have plenty of circumstantial evidence leading them to point the finger at wolves.

"There were wolf tracks all around the body, and drag marks associated with those wolf tracks," Holloway said.

Tracks indicated more than one wolf was involved.

"From the number of prints at the scene, we're thinking there probably were, possibly, two, three, maybe four," Holloway said.

Wolf attacks on humans are rare and there has not been a documented case of a wolf killing a human in Alaska. But concerns over the large predators persist.

In 2007, villagers in the western Eskimo village of Marshall posted sentries at night on the town periphery to keep wolves out after a pack of wolves attacked and killed six sled dogs. A wolf killed by villagers turned out to be rabid.

In Chignik Bay, a community of 105 residents, villagers were already were on alert because of wolves running boldly nearby, said Johnny Lind, president of the village council.

In comments Thursday before the autopsy results were announced, Lind said wolf involvement was apparent.

"It's obvious. Goodness. It's obvious," he said.

Since Tuesday, people were not traveling alone, school children were accompanied to school and armed patrols on snowmobiles were looking for wolves, he said.

"Everybody's kind of staying close to the village," he said.

Multiple calls left for the spokeswoman of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Jennifer Yuhas, were not returned Thursday.

Most adult male wolves in Alaska weigh 85 to 115 pounds but they occasionally reach 145 pounds, according to the Department of Fish and Game. Females average 5 to 10 pounds lighter than males and rarely weigh more than 110 pounds. Wolves reach adult size by about 1 year of age, and the largest wolves occur where prey is abundant year round.

Rick Luthi, the Lake and Peninsula School District's chief operating officer, said Berner during her short time in Alaska tried to take in as many experiences as she could. The district distributed a photo of her on a district outing catching crab.

"She wasn't going to miss anything about living in that area," he said.

Under 5 feet tall, Berner had boxed and lately had been training for long-distance running.

"She was a gymnast by early training and was in very good physical condition," Luthi said.

But but but they're cute and furry and friendly, just like my precious little miniature teacup yorkie that I carry in my bag! </moonbat>

Seriously, damn wolves are getting more aggressive, and there's nothing on the food chain above them, save us. And the granolas are doing their damnedest to keep us from controlling those populations. I heard on the radio today that between Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, they've counted roughly 1750 wolves this year. And that's just the ones they can find.

That's okay, those they usually attack so far are those who want them around in the first place yet fail to realize just how dangerous they may be.

I have to admit, I like wolves and their role in the wild - but when it comes to wolves and humans, the wolves lose most of the time (I don't have a problem with them winning at Darwinism among humans who shouldn't breed any more and those who are just plain stupid).

To me, wolves are beautiful predators, just like the large cats and bears. They all have their place (right next to the corn and mashed potatoes). But really, I believe we need to have them, AND people NEED to learn to understand they are NOT pets, they should NOT be feed food from your porch, and if you leave your precious little poodle outside chained up to a pole because he's been running away lately (have you thought their might be a REASON he's running away?) - and you've staked out a nice little dinner for some predator, OR have a doggie-door that some wild cat can get through and you have NOTHING to deal with a wild animal INSIDE your own home except your little dogs - then perhaps you get reap what you've sown.

Some people brought up in the city just have NO concept of what it's like to live on the outskirts of civilization and what it entails - besides peace and quiet (from HUMANS). You trade one kind of animal for another, and those on the outside of civilization can't be reasoned with, nor do they respond to people lecturing them about Six Sigma or some other useless crap.

Some people are just plain STUPID, and it's only through the grace of human civilization that they are allowed to survive - because if they were born into a SPARTAN family/culture, their weakness wouldn't have been tolerated, and felony stupid usually came with a price - and that price was DEATH. This kept the real number of idiots to a minimal level.

Sometimes I really wonder if we've gone forward in our evolution (certainly in our knowledge), or have started to go backwards as far as the quality of our breeding? How else can so many people be "fatally stupid"?

I'm not opposed to wolves, per se. I am, however, flatly opposed to turning loose wolves with no provision for controlling, a cunning, intelligent, ruthless predator.

I predict that there is going to be a whole lot more triple-s out in Chignik and other villages with wolf problems. Here in Anchorage there isn't much any of us can do even when brown bears are mauling people in the city parks; there are just too many people around. But Chignik is certified BFE, and I doubt that many locals will be anything but hostile to the wildlife troopers if they try to interfere.

My opinion is that our rate of DEvolution is directly related the the percent of GDP wasted on Welfare. And we ALL know what is happening to that rate.
