I think those safes have eproms in them - even when you remove the battery, once you put it back in, it will work again.

I understand about the eeproms, but still not the "reset the lock" bit...
EDIT: Re-reading the thread, it seems the battery was dead?

I'd willfully forgotten about this thread. Better it stand as a warning to others.
Yes, DD: the short story is, the battery was dead. The explanation was, I threw away the battery that came with the safe, and opened a NEW package of 9V batteries and put one in. Then, when the safe appeared to malfunction, in my mind I dismissed that part of the troubleshooting because I had already eliminated it. Finally, after things went tango uniform, I decided to replace the battery again and - voila! - everything worked.

And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Was that the second battery (my safe has TWO batteries), or did you need to replace the same battery TWICE?
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.
I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

The safe only has one battery.
