I'm a big fan of .22LR conversion kits for guns, have one for a full-size Kimber, and one for my LH Stag 2L. Both of them are more fun than should be allowed by law, and are great for cheap plinking, starting new shooters, and general foolishness.
Recently bought a "used" Kimber Compact conversion that fits great on my EDC Pro Carry. Now, the little Minions that aren't big enough to ballast a .45 ACP can shoot Papa's carry gun! I'm thinking that, if they have as much fun with it as I'm having, I may not get it back!
Now this is just fun!

I have had a couple of those over the years and I really like them. I really love the CMMG .22 AR conversion the most though!

The CMMG conversions are the easiest (just pull out the bolt, and put the new bolt/adapter in) and are really accurate, for what they are. My M-forgery doesn't really have a job around here in 5.56 configuration, but with the .22LR kit in place, it's great for squirrels in the pecan trees or rabbits in the garden. (Or armadillos digging up the front yard.)
And they make them in right- and left-hand versions, which I really like!
And I think that anyone who owns a 1911 owes it to themselves to get one of the Kimber kits, they are absolutely the most fun you can have and still keep your clothes on!

I still need to pick up a decent 1911 frame; I bought a Colt Ace (floating chamber) conversion kit from the CMP years ago. It won't fit my Kimber frame (way too tight), doesn't work on a Series 80, and an Essex I picked up to try also would have taken too much work (it now serves on a Mech Tech CCU so I don't have to swap frames any more, and the Mech Tech doesn't care about slide rail fit).
I've been looking forward to trying the conversion but it would be nice to be able to check a frame for fit before buying it.

Brownnell's sells (sold, maybe still..) a filler plate for the series 80's that eliminates the 2-pc firing pin linkage in the frame on a series 80. My 70 series Ace kit works just fine on my series 80 frame...Rich Jordan wrote:I still need to pick up a decent 1911 frame; I bought a Colt Ace (floating chamber) conversion kit from the CMP years ago. I'm not old--It's too early to be this late.

Whenever I open this thread, I have difficulty really focusing on the topic of .22 conversions, because I can't get past the notion of somebody still using a 1911 as a carry gun...

Is the Kimber kit Kimber-specific or will it work on any 1911?First Shirt wrote:And I think that anyone who owns a 1911 owes it to themselves to get one of the Kimber kits, they are absolutely the most fun you can have and still keep your clothes on!
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .

Should work on any 1911, but I've only run them on Kimbers.

I'm open to better ideas, just haven't found one yet. Although, in almost 40 years of concealed carry, the only time I've ever drawn a weapon, it was a single-action Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt. Guy took one look at it, from about 50 feet away, very slowly and carefully laid down his jack handle, and stood quietly until the cops showed up. No loud noises, no blood, and no paperwork, so I'm calling it a win.Netpackrat wrote:Whenever I open this thread, I have difficulty really focusing on the topic of .22 conversions, because I can't get past the notion of somebody still using a 1911 as a carry gun...
