I wouldn't want to be the cracker who did it. They're looking at serious Federal time (who doesn't have parole). And I wouldn't be surprised if the judge doesn't slap another 10-20 years on the sentence to just be sure he's not let out early.

yeah they have already said that the secret service and the FBI are involved... state of AK allows for 5 years ofr each incident, federal law allows for 1 year... not a light sentence...

plus the sites that reprint the info are going to be charged with dealing in, receiving and distributing stolen property.

EDIT: I have to stress!!! the guys that pulled this are not obama fan boys or some liberal hit squad... these guys amount to the modern equivalent of the 1970's electronics and phone phreaking clubs... socially inept, mostly teens and probably almost all living at their moms house... Turns out it wasn't a particularly elegant or clever hack. Dude used wikipedia to look up the answers to her password reset security questions, and reset the password on her account. Hell, that barely qualifies as social engineering, and would be detected the next time she went to check email.

most hacks are only a bit of research and a educated guess... very few people are actually what hollywood would call a hacker. most of the real pros are either in prison or very wealthy and working as independent security consultants.
