CCW while traveling questions

Post by TheIrishman »

I'm in the planning stages of "The great road trip of 2014". I have my Florida non-resident permit and am going for the Utah permit sometime in the next month or two. Combined, they will allow me to carry in all but one state I'll be passing through.

First a travel Itinerary(blue is legal, red not):
I'll only be passing through PA/WV before hitting NC/SC for some camping upstate and possibly hitting the beach in SC. From there I'll be passing through GA on my way to visit a friend and my uncle in FL.

So, first question...Car carry is legal in SC(from what I've found) without a permit but it must be in a "glove box". Are they strict about the definition of "glove box" or is the console/some other storage acceptable?

From FL I'll be passing through AL,MS/LA(possibly stopping for some cajun food, unarmed in places which serve alcohol) on my way to a few days camping at Galveston Island state park(TX) and then just north of Dallas to visit a few friends.

TX demands that a concealed firearm truly is concealed. Also, for car carry, the gun must remain out of sight. Currently I'm looking at "places off limits" and searching for info on CC in state parks. Anyone have info?

I'll then be passing through OK/AR on my way to TN for some more camping and then up through KY to IN before beginning my trek home through OH and PA.

Are there anythings I should know about the laws in the states I've listed? Does anyone know about any restrictions on having a long gun in the trunk(unloaded, but thinking of bringing the AR to get some shooting in)?

ETA: I've found that CC is not legal in TX or TN state parks, but am unclear on car carry in said parks(I'll be traveling in a small camper van).

Here's one site that says you may carry concealed in state parks. Questions 26 and 27 answers most of your questions.

In addition, the last legislative session, they passed a law that was enacted on Sept 1 which makes accidental disclosure of a concealed carry okay. It's no longer considered brandishing.

This is the outdated manual but it doesn't say a thing about state parks. Look at PC 46.03 and PC 46.035 especially. Also look at PC 30.05 and PC 30-06. SOME Texas state parks are on Corps of Engineer land and you CAN'T carry there according to federal law. Storage in Texas means, not readily available. Under a pile of junk in the back of your SUV, in the trunk of a sedan, those types of places. Finally, if you are stopped by a LEO, you HAVE to notify them you're carrying. Most just tell you not to touch it. Hopes this helps and IF your trip comes near the El Paso area, look me up.

A good site for information that's updated regularly is handgunlaw.us

In addition to the interactive map of where your permit is good for, they have state summaries (such as the Ohio one as an example) that I save and store on my tablet/laptop just prior departure for states I'm traveling through on that trip.

Each of the summary pages usually have direct links to the official state site (AG, State Patrol, etc) handling CCW.

The big things in Ohio: You must inform an LE officer when carrying during an official interaction. Follow their instructions. Attempting to handle your weapon without explicit instructions from LE could be a chargeable offense.

Carry in bars/restaurants serving alcohol OK so long as you don't drink and they are not otherwise posted.

Long gun unloaded, cased and in the trunk OK, but ammo and loaded mags need to be in a separate container (which some interpretations could mean an outside pocket of the rifle case. To be safe I keep mine in a locked ammo can).

If you desire to CCW, DON'T come to COMMIEFORNIA - even if we have one of the most BEAUTIFUL parks in the ENTIRE USA (Yosemite - and yes, I'm biased 8-) )!!! Although parts of Sequoia-King's Canyon is also absolutely incredible and close to a mirror of some parts of Yosemite.

DO NOT bring your freedom-loving money to this commie state!! NOTHING short of ABSOLUTE bankruptcy is going to get these fucktard's attention in Sacrakornhole and make them realize they NEED to start spending within their means. Unfortunately, the recent bail-out of Detroit also makes them believe they can count of Uncle Sugar to bail the dhimmicraps out should they continue to go overboard until we can no longer pay our bills!! These assholes in charge need to be put on the hook and made responsible for all the excess spending which is not needed to continue with the state's mandated operations.

But that'll never happen either - 'cause I live in a state full of ignorant Hollyweird-worshiping IDIOTS who worry more about their dose of IDIOT TV programming than they do about how their state is being driven over the cliff - and it doesn't have a parachute (except for liberal administrations like the current one in DC)!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

We're starting to sell or git rid of/donate a WHOLE LOT of stuff so we can move out of this hell-hole!!

Do we have any hard-core fishermen on this forum? I have some quality fishing rods I got from my mom when her boyfriend died and I'd like to sell them - they're almost brand-new and their retail price is over $200 apiece. Anyone interested???

And we're shopping for a new state to move to, if we don't simply get on the road with a newer and larger RV. But in any case, we NEED to minimize our possessions and that means a LOT of stuff is going up for sale/donation.
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON

Here in SC, you can carry in your car in a closed container that has a fastener...

If you come through the Charlotte area, let me know and we will have a drink or two.

Except in Canton. If you get pulled over there, best to keep your mouth shut and pray.

Oh, and I forgot. Stay out of Canton.

You'll probably be doing this anyway, but if you take along two lockable containers - one for pistol, one for mags/ammo - you can lock up pretty well legally anywhere if you're unsure.

Seems like the most restrictive states say no carry in publicly owned places - police stations, courts, schools, etc. You probably won't be there anyway. Some restrict sporting events.

Mostly when I travel, I try to figure out the most restrictive restrictions and then avoid those places everywhere. Sounds like you can't really do that, going to parks and all.

Good luck, and if you get as far north in AR as southern MO, feel free to give me a shout.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D
