survival classes

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

survival classes

Post by JKosprey »

I'm currently enrolled in a wildlife management degree program where many of the jobs out there involve extended periods of time in the backcountry. This summer I spent 60 days camped out on an island-which although it wasn't far from shore, was pretty primitive. My program encourages students to get out in the field and obtain seasonal work as much as possible...unfortunately I've been told that my army obligation for this year will extend through the entire month of July. This limits my options for summer employment. Although I'm well aware that employers can't discriminate based on my reserve status, it's really not beneficial to anyone involved if I miss an entire month of a three month work period.

I would still like to build my resume and skill base, so I've started thinking of attending practical classes over the summer. Although some of this is covered within the degree requirements, I feel like classes in wilderness survival, animal tracking, and the like would be rather useful. Has anyone on the board attended a program they'd like to recommend? Or one I should stay away from?

Stay away from SERE, in Maine, in late October, in the rain. Just sayin'

NOLS has a good rep for that sort of thing.
