Yeah! Stayed up last night to watch the streaming video from NASA/JPL. They pulled off one hell of a complicated operation with that untested landing system. Going over to the website now to check the newest pictures.

Here's a great pic--the Mars orbiter managed to catch it riding the chute down. Supposedly a split second window of opportunity:

The pic of the parachute has got to be one of the most incredible pictures ever taken in the space genre. I just watched a recording of the guys at Jet Propulsion Laboratory during the descent and landing. I have never seen so many happy, crying nerds. But I will admit that I felt a little emotional for it as well. Now if we can just get more people off this damn rock and out there.

JPL buddy of mine whose wife was in our wedding was [strike]one of the grown ups in the room full of nerds[/strike] flight director. Pretty excited is an understatement.

Yeah. The last time I saw anything like this, Scarlett Johansson agreed to come to Comic-Con dressed as Princess Leia.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Their next logical step would be to create a mission to recover the rover. No one's tried that yet, have they? After all, it's a two-way run instead of just one way. We know we can still go out. The big deal to me is can we still come back?
