HUGLU Shotguns

Ok, so i managed to get this amazingly slow ship internet to work for the forum and it just so happens I have come upon a very important question. What if anything can people tell me about Huglu Shotguns? We just received an e-mail letting us know that the builder is making them available for purchase in the next port and will coordinate for us all the importation and later transfer to our local friendly neighborhood FFL.

So, what if anything can you tell me about these shotguns? What is their reputation/quality/value? Note I didn't say price, because I'm coming back from deployment and have the extra money.

Sounds like you're going to Marmaris.

Huglu is a cooperative of various tiny Turkish gun manufacturers. They have worked hard on the overall quality and brand reputation in the last few years. I have seen some that were excellent, on a par with considerably more expensive Spanish and Italian guns.

My advice, for what it's worth - buy an over/under or side by side; whatever floats your boat and fits you OK. Those are the ones you can expect the best savings on as compared to US prices. Do haggle, and be sure you get the spare chokes and choke keys for it. Depending on price, buy a second identical one for backup and spares. Avoid the semi-auto and pump models - you can buy better cheaper statesside.

Oh, one should note, Huglus finer grade shotguns can have some SPECTACULAR walnut.

Turkish walnut is some of the best in the world for figure and chatoyance. Also, most of what is sold as Circassian walnut, is actually Turkish walnut; and has been since WW1.

It helps that Turkey also produces a LOT of walnuts.

Very nice wood, and they are framed to the caliber - a little 28 gauge SxS would be lovely - and, it might not be that much to have one fitted to you... (DeHaan was selling custom Huglus for awhile.)

Well, considering an AyA #4/53 boxlock in 28 gauge is a little over 4 grand these days..

Most Huglu manufacture is as a subcontractor for other manufacturers. The very nice CZ break action shotguns are made my Huglu for example.

As a result, the fit/finish/ ornamentation can range from plane jane to spectacular. I have not actually held any of their guns that are Huglu branded but they are supposed to be quite nice.

Trulock does not list them on their website, but they make Huglu threaded chokes.

There has been some serious issues with the CZ shotguns - notably the barrels aren't blued, they're black chromed, with many reports of the finish literally coming off in your hands, and "color case hardening" that is actually just heat discoloration done with a torch. I will say that this has been supposedly fixed, after CZ put the hammer down on Huglu to fix the problem.

The biggest issue is that quality seems to be very uneven. Some people have nothing but headaches with the guns, and others given great reviews.
