It's a shame too, Coopers are really nice rifles. I almost bought one at one point. :(

David Codrea over at The War on Guns also takes him to task and points out how Cooper's company isn't standing behind their owner's politics:
Now it seems like they're trying to distance the company from its owner (and make excuses for him):
  • Regarding the USA Today Article. Cooper Firearms of Montana, Inc. did not contribute and does not support in any fashion the campaign of Senator Obama.

Nine months ago Dan Cooper (personally) made an online donation to the campaign in an effort to help defeat Hillary Clinton and in protest of American plant closures and the shipping of jobs overseas. Three months ago he made yet another donation to the McCain campaign and the RNC totaling over twice that given to Obama campaign.

There is no doubt that the article in USA Today has caused a considerable response. To this end we are encouraged and stand with our fellow NRA members and supporters of the Second Amendment and against those who oppose it.
Blah, blah, blah...I'm not buying it, or any of Dan's products (personally).
EDIT:

Did you catch the statement from Cooper saying the Republican party has moved SO FAR TO THE RIGHT?
Cooper changed sides, he said, "probably because of the war. And also because the Republican Party has moved so far right in recent years."

He also likes Obama's message about "the retooling of America
Well, he's certainly moved into the "Tool" category himself.

Who? Never heard of the guy. More telling would be to ask execs. of firearms companies that have high volumes and large civilian market penetration where they stand.

I don't care what a exec. of a "boutique" firearms company that has small market share and sells mostly to "elite hunters" has to say.

Cooper is in the same scale of rifle production as Dakota Arms, Kimber rifles, etc. They're very well known amongst varmint hunters, filling the space between mass produced rifles like Remington, and true custom build rifles.

Cooper’s employees will be filing the space in the unemployment line now thanks to their idiot boss… Kinda sad when you look at it that way.

Cooper changed sides, he said, "probably because of the war. And also because the Republican Party has moved so far right in recent years."

Mary Kay Cashman runs a Caterpillar franchise in Nevada... This year, she changed her registration to Democrat to caucus for Obama in the Nevada primary.

"There's an abundant amount of evidence that the status quo isn't working and the direction needs to be changed," she said. Asked why she didn't support Democrat Al Gore in 2000 or Kerry in 2004, she said, "There are personality traits that are required in a leader, and neither Gore nor Kerry had those."

Bill Struve runs a small business in Wilmington, N.C. He has given Obama $2,300 this year. "The Republicans have … lost their footing on economics," he said.
You begin to wonder how far back it has been that the public school system has been sending people like this out into the world. Just like the topic that quotes "conservative" justices as saying that the Heller decision was "activist", can someone tell me where any of these rubes like Mr. Cooper could possibly think that the Republicans have moved to the right? The "right" of WHO -- Lenin? Good freakin' grief!

The "status quo" isn't working and we need a change, according to Ms. Cashman, so she'll put her economic head on the chopping block (and, considering that she owns a Caterpillar franchise, it probably a good guess that she wants to make over $250K next year) AND hand the executioner a blade that she sharpened for him??? Is that the only kind of "change" that she can imagine? If an unjust amount of governmental confiscation has led to the present "status quo" then the increasing the amount of confiscation will result in "change that we can believe in"? Good Lord...

And sure, Mr. Struve, the Republicans have "lost their footing on economics" -- hell, they lost it 70 freakin' years ago! -- but the Democrats haven't lost their footing on economics, so as a small business owner you'll vote for them? Dumb question, Mr. Struve: if the Republican view of economics is flawed and the Democrats is (by default) "better", then what is the correct "footing on economics"?

I'd pull what's left of my hair out but, having to deal with two liberal nephews who "reason" similarly, I only have one handful left -- and I'm saving that for next week.
