STI Trojan Review

Post by Kommander »

Today was an auspicious day for the Kommander gun collection. I, after 3 and a half months of waiting, took delivery of my STI Trojan from the FBMG STI group buy. One of the reasons for the long wait, other than it being a semi-custom 1911, is that I had the sights changed to Novak cut instead of the target Bomar cut they usually come with.

Out of the box the gun is a very functional mid level 1911 and is quite probably all the 1911 I will ever need. However when it comes to 1911s I am a bit of a traditionalist and therefore not the biggest fan of the off color barrel bushing, hammer, and grip screws. The gun also comes with a flat plastic mainspring housing and a full length guide rod. For some people this would probably be ok, but the flat mainspring housing digs into my palm and will be replaced with a rounded one.

The full length guide rod is a pain the the ass. Disassembly requires a bent paperclip and a good deal of hand strength. I would like to put in a standard recoil system, but when I tried to install the one from my Mil-Spec it would not fit. So it looks like Ill just have to deal with the less friendly take down system.

The fit and finish are nothing shot of spectacular, at least compared to my Springfield Mil-Spec. There is no movement between the slide and the frame and the finish is holding up well so far. The gun shot well, but about 50 rounds in the rear sight came loose. it is held in with a little set screw so I had the ranges gunsmith tighten it up for me. As first I was angry, but I later found out that they ship them this way on purpose so people can adjust them easily. I just wish someone had told me first.

All in all I think the STI Trojan is certainly a good buy, especially at the price I paid. I just wish I could do something about this damn full length guide rod.

LOL Mek.

Is it a bull barrel? Otherwise I would think it would fit...

Looking at the pics on the STI sight, can't see why you couldn't change out the recoil system though I can't figure out why you'd want to. The standard STI one piece guide rod will interchange with a conventional 1911 quite easily.

Unless of course you went with the "recoil master" system which appears to fit a standard 1911 without any issues. But uses a cute little disassembly tool.

I got the standard full length guide rod and the gun is a standard bushing set up, no bull barrel. The reason I would like to change it out is because A) it is a pain to remove compared to the standard setup and B) requires tools. I don't like the idea of a carry gun that requires tools to field strip. When I tried to install the standard recoil set up from my Mil-Spec the recoil spring plug would not fit in the STI gun. It was a really close fit, so close I could probably have taped it in with a hammer, but that would have been really stupid.
