Clarence Clemons, RIP

Clarence Clemons passed away yesterday as a result of complications of a stroke he suffered last week. Age 69.

Whether haunting and soulful as in Jungleland, or rocking as in Born to Run, he and his sax were what, along with Springsteen himself, made The E Street Band special to me and why they are still one of my favorite all time bands. Along with the Stones and the Who, they are Rock n Roll to me.

I never got to see them live, but the chemistry between Springsteen and Clemons was obvious, whether on video, or on live cuts.

Quite frankly, Springsteen is never at his best without Clemons IMHO.

As a Jersey boy, I grew up on Springsteen. I still like his older stuff. Newer stuff...... .

I met Clarence 20 odd years ago in a restaurant in Red Bank, NJ. He was very gracious to everyone who approached him that night.

I was also fortunate enough to be in Asbury Park when Bruce played a surprise set at the legendary Stone Pony. I happened to be a few blocks away when I heard on 102.7 WNEW (a pioneering FM rock station that's no longer rock) he was showing up there. One of the best shows I have ever seen. They were over-capacity and we were wedged in like sardines. They, thankfully, stopped letting any other people in. But they opened the door so the people dancing in the street could better hear the music.

I also fondly remember attending the Born in the USA shows at the Meadowlands Giant's stadium. Great times.

I remember the only good thing about the drive home(and by "drive" I mean "inch slowly down the parkway in rushhour traffic" ) in the late 90s was listening to O&A on WNEW. I even still got a bunch of WOW stickers somewhere - they never worked unfortunately.

I remember showing up on the job one morning to find one pasted on each fender of one of my work trucks. I fired the idiot on the spot (was looking for an excuse to get rid of him anyway)!

I like boobs as much as the next guy. But it doesn't promote a professional image on a business truck w. my company name plastered all over it!

For those of you out of the area, WOW stands for Whip em Out Wednesday. A radio stunt promoted by Opie and Anthony that encouraged women to bare their fun bags when they saw the sticker.

It doesn't, but I can't begin to tell you how many utility service trucks I saw with them.

And I never put it on the truck, I jammed it in the back window of the truck - easy enough to remove.
