AR-10 Scope help.

Post by deathrider1579 »

So I've gone and plunked down the cash for that .308 AR-10 that I've wanted since I knew what one was, yea those many long years ago.
Its got a PRS stock, 20" BBL, Rails out the hooha etc.
For rings I've picked (I think, haven't bought them yet) the GGGAZ QD rings.

Now I need a scope.

I've dropped some coin for the rifle, some coin that represents a significant amount of my disposable income, and I want to make it a good DMR (10 - 6/800yd) type rifle set up, which granted will mostly be used for paper, hogs and deer hunting but at the same time durable enough to survive ... whatever else I may require of it should the zombies rise or the Russians decide they are commies again.
Now I'm looking for quality but I'm not looking to spend money for no reason.
I fear I'm being led down the path of internet yougottohavethisoneoryou'lldieinarealgunfight itus
For it seems that the only scope worthy of a bad ass AR-10 style rifle is Nightforce.

So what says this corner of the Internets? I'd like to spend as much less than the Nighforce as I can, but if the NF is really the only game in town worth playing, I'd like to know so I can start saving for a big purchase again.

Thanks for your help.

There's a NightForce sitting on top of my 24" AR10. I love it.

It did add ~75% to the price and time it took for me to build the thing.

If you run out of ammo then the Nightforce will definitely work as an improvised weapon if you dismount it.

The other optic I've been looking at is the Vortex PST 4-16x scope. with FFP reticule its right at 800 bucks.
I know everyone says you gotta spend a lot to get good optics, I just don't know, and really haven't been able to get anyone to tell me if the NF in the same magnification range is worth basically $1,000 more than the Vortex.

My guess is that the issue would come down to dependability more than repeatability and accuracy, but that's just a guess. I've mostly only ever shot with irons, I own 1 Leupold VX-III 6-20 that I have on a Savage 10fp in .308, to me its freaking amazing but it also constitutes my only experience with good glass, or I guess according to the guys over at SnipersHide its like average glass. Anyhoo I've rambled a bit, I welcome advice and guidance.

If you read my article above, I recommended the Vortex. I think the Vortex PST line, and the Burris XTR are the best values on the market for midrange glass.
Cool, I did read your article, just must have missed that part, sometimes when I'm scrolling I miss a paragraph. Thanks so much for your help, and your family is in my prayers.
