TVP for long term food storage

Post by rightisright »

Textured Vegetable Protein has a very long shelf-life (12-15 or more years under the right conditions). And it's very inexpensive compared to freeze dried meat products.

My issue: phytoestrogens. I spent a few hours last night and one tonight researching the effect of phytoestrogens on healthy males. The results of my research are confusing to say the least. There seem to be studies supporting both the pros and cons.

I know aglifter says soy is a no-no for strength trainers/athletes. But what about as a SHTF protein? It's so cheap I would just store it and use it if needed. I wouldn't mind giving it away or throwing it out when it comes close to the expiry date.

Anyone else explore this option for long term storage?

Good tip on the meat. That's pretty much like making beef jerky.

As far as the TVP, I would definitely not rely on it as a primary source of protein. I have a freezer full of vacuum sealed chicken, turkey and beef (should be good for 2-3 years according to estimates I've seen) that I will be rotating. I also have many pounds of various legumes and dehydrated eggs for protein.

If I were to purchase TVP products (which I don't think will happen because of the negatives), they would only be used if the SHTF and only a few times a week.

Thanks! Funny that Google didn't suggest that - I suppose it was swamped by all the loom and dye links.
