Finding the time.

Post by Candyman »

A lot of you know that my hobby and love is stock work. I repair, refinish and save about 100 or more stocks a year. It's a hobby that has been out of controll for a very long time.
What I find hard to do is the time to work on some of my own guns.
Well about two weeks ago I put my foot down and told myself that I had to work on one of my own guns and get it done and not take a year or more to get it finished.
So I picked out one of my Turkish Mausers, A WWI reworked German Mauser rifle called a ATF Turkish Mauser.
Here is what it looked like when I got it.

Here it is out of the stock.

I had to repair one of the screws in the buttplate, it looked like a nail. :?

Do not relish to feel what the men that used these weapons felt when they saw the elephant. For the elephant has tusk and to see him is to have his tusk dig deep into your soul. You will always have a part of you that will be cold and empty.

I made an electrolysis tank with a cell phone chargegr and a plastic tub and removed the rust after I had cleaned off the crud.

I then stripped the stock.

The stock is a light color Turkish Walnut, which is not that common so, I did an oil scrub and hand rubbed finish with Pure Tung Oil (PTO) and finished off with Tom's 3/1 mix.

Then I put it all back together yesterday and this is what she looks like.

I do have to say that I am very happy with the way it came out. Now to find the time to do a few more of my own guns.

You're thinking to small! I know of a guy in Georgia who likes to use 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock tanks and DC arcwelders to do derusting. Says an entire box of Arm&Hammer washing soda is about right.

Keep them coming Candy, I like your little repair essays, even if I don't always comment.
