UNIVERSITY CITY – Jason Gross drives past Camp Pendleton every day on his way to work with his father at an oil and gas company in San Clemente. So when he was midway through booking the family's annual fishing trip, he decided to invite eight Marines along.

Gross, a University City resident, and his father, Alan, have been chartering “Big Al's Tuna Tourney,” an eight-day ocean fishing trip, for the past 11 years. They usually charge anglers about $2,685 to sign up for the trip, which travels 500 miles down the coast of Mexico on a boat called the Excel.

This year, the pair decided to donate eight spots on the boat to Marines from Camp Pendleton who were awarded Purple Hearts for injuries suffered during duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. It's “a way to thank them for all their service,” he said.
