Re: Space jumper is up!
I have heard a number of rumors regarding who knew what about any damage the Columbia had suffered. These focus primarily on a spybird that was allegedly re-positioned to get a look at the underside of the shuttle while it was in orbit. The rumor goes that they found some damage but knew that there was nothing that could be done and so decided not to tell anyone as there was no point in worrying everyone.

Not to offend anyone, but I thought of this while watching the jump:

HS, I hope you realize by now that when I make such generalized statements, I'm not necessarily targeting you, HOWEVER you MAY also be included in my further statement about not understanding the risks, etc., etc., but it was by NO MEANS meaning you specifically and/or in particular. After all, we ALL know there are LOTS of folks out there who would fit into the boat of uneducated people about the risks of space travel/Earth protection of the Van Allen belts, and what MIGHT happen if/when you leave it.Highspeed wrote:I do though Mike. I have had an interest in manned spaceflight since I was a child. In fact I can't even remember a time when I wasn't fascinated by it. I have copies of just about every US spacecraft manual written, my idea of fun is a couple of hours reading them and tracing the schematics. Hell, I know how to operate the Apollo guidance computer and also it's internal architecture308Mike wrote:
Actually, for someone who doesn't understand the risks of being outside Earth's protective shell, it's a valid question/complaint.

The problems are not insurmountable, but I agree 100% with you on the difficulty.
Baumgardner was going in the wrong direction. If Red Bull want to put money into space research, great - but make it something useful that will get us off this rock. Our future is in the stars, or at least it should be.
After all, I KNOW you're a damned smart guy, and even more importantly, you also have a lot of Common Sense (which is even more important than just being smart). If I had a successful business, I'd hire you in a heart-beat!

Yes, that's it. Thanks. Don't know why it wouldn't post for me, said it was too big.

I know you're computer savvy, so much of this is NOT new to you, but you might find another tool to use which you can make effective.Darrell wrote:Yes, that's it. Thanks. Don't know why it wouldn't post for me, said it was too big.
Actually, if you use Firefox, one of the options when investigating a page is (by right-clicking in a page, and NOT on an image or other item), and selecting "View Page Info", that will give you a box containing most of the information contained on that page, including info about the images, media, background, links, etc., etc. It's a GREAT resource when you want to locate something on a page and wondered where it actually came from.
Once you see the item you're looking for (you might have to go to the MEDIA tab), you might have to scroll up and down to find the image you're looking for. Once you find it, simply select it and then right-click (you'll see the full URL of the image above in the upper windows. You'll get a short menu, with one of them being COPY, and you'll see the ADDRESS info for the image above.
This is EXTREMELY handy for when web developers hide images behind clear JPG images or small graphics stretched to fill the screen.
Bottom line, if it hits your computer, there's usually ways to grab that image even if they do things like disable the right-click on the mouse, etc., etc. First off, if you use the NOSCRIPT utility, if you can view the image with-out scripts being run, then perhaps you won't have a problem copying the image to begin with, especially since most all image protection measure NEED to be able to run scripts. If you can see an image without running scripts, the VAST majority of the protection schemes are either watermarks on the individual images (nothing you can do there other than remove the Watermarks via Photoshop), or putting clear images over the images you want to view/capture/save, since they are now on YOUR computer! Of course, you can always search your TEMP files and Internet Temporary Files, but you shouldn't HAVE to go through all that.
If you can, turn OFF scripts while viewing the page you see the image on, if it still shows up, you shouldn't have too much of a problem grabbing a copy of it. Now what you DO with that copy might be subject to debate and/or regulation, but at least you now have the image you wanted.
So far, I've found there hasn't been an image which has been viewed on my computer that I couldn't get a capture of it one way or another. Some of it is easy, and some of it requires a LOT of work (and undeleting files). Much of it depends on just how much you want that image!

That is much like what I heard... I was taking a class from a professor that was personal friends with two of the people on Columbia.Kommander wrote:I have heard a number of rumors regarding who knew what about any damage the Columbia had suffered. Plus I knew a guy that worked at a video dubbing/editing firm out on the space coast that had some stories to tell. He talked about a NASA controlled spybird many times...

Sometimes I "cheat" and just do a screen capture and crop it down to the picture I want. Wont be the same quality, but it's a fast way to get it.308Mike wrote:So far, I've found there hasn't been an image which has been viewed on my computer that I couldn't get a capture of it one way or another. We use Snag-it a lot at work for grabbing bits of engineering drawings to include in emails or slides.
