Urban SHTF: Shotgun or Pistol Caliber Carbine?

Having been inside a closed space when a shotgun was ND'd (don't ask), there's an astounding silence, but you can still hear voices, etc -- the odd part is it's not more than a couple seconds until you can hear at a decent level, but, dang does it hurt!...

And it's not near as bad as a rifle being fired in a room. The sound of a shotgun is much lower (particularly 12-ga) and not as sharp as a rifle. A rifle REALLY hurts!

The second worst sound I ever heard was some idiot, one of the good guys even, let off a burst from an AK in a metal corridor. Holy crap!
