A leap of faith on your part? Wierd beliefs are not necessarily erroneous.CByrneIV wrote:Ahhh, no more devout atheist than an ex catholicDenis wrote:You repeat yourself, no?CByrneIV wrote:... their beliefs are weird... but they are Christians.

I know you know that's not what I meant. I meant using one of the more accepted translations, such as the NIV Bible.Netpackrat wrote:They probably felt that a mini-series filmed using dead and ancient languages would have a limited market appeal.AlaskaTRX wrote:There were other times when they had opportunities to have the actor playing Jesus quote directly from the scripture, but they chose not to. So I'm really not sure how you can call a TV series "The Bible" and then not use it verbatim when available. Seemed disengenuine to me.

I'm pretty sure if you are really Mormon that your view on Jesus is not the same as a Christian. Simply from the fact that the Mormon idea of Jesus being a "spirit child" and procreated by Elohim divorces the religions right there. Jesus is God (John 8:58).Lokidude wrote:Seeing as the first two books of LDS Scrpiture are the Old and New Testaments of the King James Version of the Bible, I'm pretty sure that the Jesus I studied as a Methodist growing up is the same one I study now as a Mormon.AlaskaTRX wrote:
Maybe this was supposed to be Mormon Jesus, because it wasn't an accurate Christian Jesus.
To each his own, however...
There is a difference.

relevant quote therefrom:
I happen to think their beliefs are weird... but they are Christians. If you know, in your soul enlightened by the spirit of God, that the true path to the father is through the son, you are a Christian.
If you don't... you aren't.
It is the only criteria for Christianity.
ONLY
That doesn't make you a "good" Christian, or a moral one, or a virtuous one; or any other thing, but a Christian.
Not believing in the dictates of a particular church, or ANY church or preacher, or hierarchy, or temporal authority... or even the words written in any particular bible; does not make you "other than a Christian".
Thank you for the passage from the Book of Chris...
I'm sorry that you have to resort to name calling, yet again, Chris. I figured that after what happened with Pawpaw that you'd take a breath and step back from the keyboard before tossing insults. Just because I do not follow YOUR beliefs or trust in YOUR logic on what YOU think something does or doesn't mean - this does not make me a bigot. My beliefs stem from the Bible, not a rationalist slant of the scripture that bends it to what the world would like (just to give you those warm and fuzzies). Read the New Testament and then the Book of Mormon and tell me how they're compatible. The Mormon teaching of Jesus is that He was not eternally God, that He was procreated as the first "spirit child" of the Father, that He is a "spirit brother" of Lucifer, that He had multiple wives, and He was begotten through physical relations with Mary. That's not the Christian view, because that is not compatible with the New Testament.
Also, Jesus is pretty clear on what saves. I'm not going to get very deep on the law & gospel behind it because, honestly, most of you don't care and the those that may probably wouldn't take the time to crack a Bible to look up what God says about it anyway. The basic tenet of Christianity is that Lord Jesus is the Son of God who came down from heaven to redeem humankind from its sins by taking the wrath of God upon Himself. He overcame death, the devil, and hell for you and has given you a place in heaven (if you want it), merely by accepting what Jesus has brought to us - redemption.
This post is not meant to preach. I am merely trying to state what being Christian is and why it is different from what Mormon's view. They're not the same and anyone that says different obviously has not done enough reading (of you know, the Bible) to understand the difference. Because really, if you are going to get in a theological debate and then make such a bold statement:
It makes me wonder if you really understand Christ, because the Gospel clearly dictates what a Christian has to believe in order to be saved. You may not agree with it, it may not make sense to you, and it certainly does not jive with what the world tells you, but it is God's word nonetheless. Not believing in the dictates of... the words written in any particular bible; does not make you "other than a Christian
Take it for what it is, or don't, but it's right there in the good book if you care to find out.
That and Mormon Jesus is still different from Christian Jesus...

Greg's First Rule of Social Interaction is that in any group, especially any group in a confined space, there will be at least one person with horrific gas. For some reason the way this thread is going made me think of that.MarkD wrote:Well, as I've previously noted, Mark's First Rule of Social Interaction says that in any population, the percentage of assholes is non-zero.

Hey, considering the recent tack that History Channel has taken, be glad they didn't say God was an extraterrestrial, Elijah and Jacob were taken up in UFOs, and Jesus was a human-alien hybrid.
I need to sit down with the DVR and watch the episodes of "Vikings" saved up. Hopefully there's no three-sided warfare with the skraelings and the Welsh.

That's not good. I kind of stopped watching the History Channel when they decided to change format to the Hitler Channel. I guess it hasn't gotten much better.dfwmtx wrote:Hey, considering the recent tack that History Channel has taken, be glad they didn't say God was an extraterrestrial, Elijah and Jacob were taken up in UFOs, and Jesus was a human-alien hybrid.

The Vikings can be entertaining - at least the one episode I watched - but a bit too "stylish and cool, and we aren't really all that bad..." Vibes a bit like a modern vampire movie.
I didn't watch much of the Bible series - the Black Samson was a bit off, but honestly, with the end of the Jewish strongmen and Greco-Roman wrestlers, it might have been a bit of a challenge to find a seriously strong and very Jewish looking actor.
Joe Greenstein is dead, but would have made a good Samson...
Younger version - strongly doubt he was actually tattooed, though, as he was raised to be a rabbi.
