Get a Fumoto drain valve. They make things so much easier.

+1. That's the plan too along with the remote filter. Going to hit the skip plate with a holesaw.

Looks like the remote filter will have to be on the frame in the wheel well in front of driver's kick panel. There is _no_ space under the hood and not much more inside the frame rails (with exhaust, trans, driveshaft etc).

Honestly at $5 large I'd just buy a used Montero, or X-terra, or even an Explorer and part out the old Montero. (probably more the tires over to the new truck.)

At the new price of $2300 it's a lot more palatable, and I'd probably go ahead.

At this point I figure it's less a matter of "good money after bad" as much as looking at the opportunity cost. Unless that truck exactly fits whatever niche you use it for there may be something better out there for less than the repair cost.

Heck I just bought a "new" 2001 F-150 extended cab for $5000 and it only has 120K miles on it.

Rebuilt a/c, hubs, brakes, suspension, steering gear, fresh radiator, 95% rubber, working power doors/windows, 3K miles on timing belt/waterpump to transfer to new engine, tags paid till next spring -- tough to put a kill order on this one. It's a game of uncertain odds but I used my best eval of the overall placed my bet and rolled the dice.

Buy a $4K used vehicle in CA and it'll cost you > $400 additional by the time you pay the state for all the transfer stuff.

If he did I missed him. I've been a moving target out of the country and behind on e-mail since Thursday late. Maybe still something in that inbox pile I've missed.

Johnny Five is Alive as of this afternoon.

Drives nice so far. They went the extra mile and rubbed out the paint and did a good dusty/wipedown of the interior.

We'll see how it goes from here.
