I think so -- he died when I was quite young, so I never saw it -- I know he was promoted quite a bit for his involvement with it. (I was told he came up w. it - which is possible, given how much autonomy he had* but I don't know that for a fact) From what I remember being told, they would put the young man in the bridge, and could then set up various scenarios that he would have to respond to -- fire in engineroom/lost XYZ, ship listing to port, no communication w. XYZ, filled the bridge w. smoke... I think I remember Dad saying something about being able to rock it around/simulate the ships being fired on, etc as well -- not sure... knowing my grandfather those "simulated explosions could have just been actual explosions being set off -- when he died, one of my uncles got rid of a bunch of old grenades he had in his shop.

*He was an old WWII vet chief, I do know he once said that he didn't want to be an officer, because as it was now, no one below... forgotten... would give him an order, and if they did, he'd just tell someone else to do it... He was one rank below the highest ranked NCO in the Navy... I think it was called a Super Chief, but that sounds like something I might have gotten mixed up as a kid. I know he got pretty far in getting Enlisted man of the year, but didn't actually get Enlisted man of the year -- he didn't make a big deal of it, but other people were.

Checking In

Post by esa5444 »

Hello everybody. This is Eugene, just checking in to say that I am alive and well. I changed my username, but otherwise I am the same old me. In fact, just today I bought a new gun. A Smith and Wesson Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman.

He was probably a Senior Chief (E-8). Only one enlisted rank above that, Master Chief, for the regular enlisted.

And, if all the stories that my father told me (US Navy Bos'n Mate, 1939-1946) were anything close to true, A Chief was Jesus Christ, Senior Chief sat at the right hand of God, and a Master Chief WAS God. Ensigns quavered in abject fear. Lieutenants (Jg and regular) genuflected in his presence, Commanders stepped aside in awed respect, and Flag officers were among the anointed few to know them from the old days and splice the yardarm with them.

Jericho941 reporting [strike]as ordered.[/strike] Former ISP technical support/cellphone customer service/box thrower. I'm currently in DEP for the US Air Force and will be shipping out in November, and I'm really excited about it. (On that note, in addition to thanks for setting up this board, I'd like to thank everyone who gave me advice about joining.)

My interests are... numerous. But the only thing that could really be called a hobby right now is computer gaming, and trying to run 1.5 miles without slowing down.

I'm sure I've rambled on about my grandfather more than anyone cares to listen to -- but he was an E-9, apparently -- Could someone please tell me what that is called?

In the Navy, it would be a Master Chief Petty Officer (Master Chief)
In the Air Force, it would be a Chief Master Sergeant
Army/Marines, it would be a Sergeant Major

I think that's right. I'm past the point of having senior moments, now I have senior episodes.
