12 guage flares in a normal shotgun

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Plus the bird bombs are great to fire from them if you have a tree full of Grackles.

Makes sense. I just wondered since I never seen anyone with them who wasn't uber-tacticool.

Figured if it was for looks, but maybe there was something I was missing.

Using actual flares and for fun I can buy, sounds like a good product.

There's nothing that can be loaded into a 40mm grenade launcher that is useful for fighting either.

Even though the media may try to make us believe that 40mm HEP grenades are being bought by the crate at ELGSs and being smuggled across the border into Mexico by pigeon hunters, there is no way to legally acquire a live 40mm HEP or WP grenade. Technically, you could get one with a DD license ($200 tax stamp for each one), but no-one (e.g. Alliant or some other .gov contractor) will sell you one.

You can buy flares and training rounds (chalk filled) for a 40mm grenade launcher, but you can get those for a 37mm launcher as well.

Of course, if the SHTF in a very big way, 40mm grenades might be more available (falling off the back of HMMVs as they cruise through your neighborhood, etc.), but in that scenario, the 40mm grenade launchers will be just as available.
