Thank god, another person who's got his head screwed on right. Every time I hear "Vodka or Gin?" after ordering a Martini, I want to jump over the bar and beat the barman to death with a bottle of Nolly Prat.

One way I judge an exceptional bar (it might have been a Joint, I only did beer and Rum and Cokes) is: When you PCS to Korea, then PCS back to the states and are back in the first town for a conference, and you walk in after almost 2 years away, the first thing the bartender says is "Where in the hell have you been?" And she remembers my usual.

Which probably means I spent Waaayyyy too much time there, but I was single and it was an easy stagger down the block home.

I guess I was imprinted at an early age by the bars in Thailand and Korea. Back then our only criteria was "have they cleaned up the mess from the last time we were here?"

Of course, in Thailand, you always looked to see if they had Mekong in bottles behind the bar. If they didn't, it mean they were "storing" it in bourbon and scotch bottles.
But there ain't many troubles that a man caint fix, with seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six."

You guys are a lot pickier than am I.

Do they have a beer I like? OK

Do they have a gin I like? OK

Do they have decent Bourbon & Irish? (I'm not a Scots drinker) OK

Does the clientele offer decent, intelligent conversation? OK

Does the bartender know what he's doing? OK

Perhaps 40 years ago, I was on a bender on St. Patrick's Day with my buddy "Irish" Tom (born on the auld sod), now long gone.

We were in the Rush St. area, then, at least, known for saloons (or bars, or whatever you choose to call them).

Tom ordered an Irish whiskey. The bartender started to pour Bushmill's.

Tom bellowed, "It's St. Paddy's Day for Chrissakes!! I don't want Protestant whiskey, I want Catholic whiskey!!!"

As a Russian Jew, I almost pissed myself.

As the wife-unit's official DD I drink alone, with nobody else*, either straight scotch, bourbon or rye or one of a small list of highballs, rum n coke, bourbon n coke, gin n tonic. Beer is right out, at my age the hard stuff is much more efficient for it's intended purpose.

*well, granddaughter might be in attendance though her concern is why that big lug is bogarting the goldfish that were obviously purchased for her consumption exclusively. Good thing she can't talk yet or I'd be getting an earful to go along with The Look (damn they learn that early...)

I was at a RESTAURANT, of all places, and they actually had "martinis" and "gimlets" on the menu -- I was beaming...

There are places like that in New York - most of them have been open a long, LOooooong time - the 21 club springs to mind - got started as a Speakeasy, eventually became a restaurant. The Speakeasy part of it is now used as wine cellar..
