3/4" ply top doors, covered with furniture pad and upholstered with the same lining cloth used under sofa cusion beds makes it look like part of the interior, unless someone is really curious and taking their time digging around.

You can even bolt it down or shoot nails into a slab, so it's not just heavy, it's immovable.

And for the two-fer, if you make the interior box carcass out of steel (or even concrete) instead of heavy plywood, it becomes a hidden-in-plain-sight cellar door cover over a stairway or ladderwell down to an unknown basement/storm shelter.

Evil geniuses and James Bond shouldn't get all the cool hideouts.

That sounds like a lot of work.

But think of affordances. Something that is supposed to be able to move, but doesn't, is MUCH more of a giveaway than something that isn't supposed to be able to move and doesn't. (A properly built and latched hidden door is a better secret keeper.)

Just giving options.

It's really pretty good. I used to hide things inside an actual sleeper sofa, that I slept on. But I just counted on it being too much work for someone to bother with, rather than *secret*.

I would put in as much work as would seem reasonable, given the value of the items being hidden.
I just like the "Purloined Letter" concept of a hollowed out sofa better than the near certainty of a substandard fit of a movable bookcase.

Void space that doesn't seem like it should be void space is key. Wherever you can find it....

People seldom move large furniture, unless it's a determined search.
