For instance, several songs will sometimes populate my awareness to the point of being an earworm, but I would not call them terrible songs (Money for Nothing for instance is one that hits me often). They just kind of stick there until replaced.

I have a feeling that the "terrible" definition came because some people just remember the bad ones that get stuck in their mind as they are the most annoying and tend to forget the ones they like since they are just background, and don't fully come to the forefront of their perception.

Oh, and to truly qualify as an earworm, it has to be passed on to someone else ("I can't get this song out of my head. Oh great! Now I've got stuck in mine! Thanks a lot!)
Unfortunately, not knowing the term from anything else, that where I went - being ignorant of the current trendy terms and all, so I had to look it up. I'm NOT saying it was the ONLY, or even the CORRECT definition of the term, but it was what I found that seemed to fit the description of what he may have been talking about.

Some of the WORST songs I've had stuck in my heard for MANY DAYS were those from Disneyland, including "It's a Small World", "Pirates of the Caribbean", etc., etc. Those worst one was the Pirates' song which says - Get THAT stuck in your head for a few WEEKS!! You know the music, so now here's the words to stick in YOUR head (I didn't START this thread, so don't blame ME for sharing these GREAT tunes   ):
Pirates of the Caribbean
Theme Park Song

Lyrics by Xavier Atencio
Music by George Bruns

Music Only -or- Pirate Sing-Along

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me

We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me

We extort, we pilfer, we filch and sack
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
Maraud and embezzle and even high-jack
Drink up me hearties yo ho

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me

We kindle and char, inflame and ignite
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We burn up the city, we're really a fright
Drink up me hearties, yo ho

We're rascals, scoundrels, villains, and knaves
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We're devils and black sheep, really bad eggs
Drink up me hearties, yo ho

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me

We're beggars and blighters and ne'er do-well cads
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads
Drink up me hearties, yo ho

Several years ago, when Pink Floyd came out with their LIVE album (1995 - PULSE), and I was in the local music store parking lot in my RV heading out on a trip to Yosemite Valley, I heard a couple of songs on the radio and I IMMEDIATELY HAD TO HAVE IT for my drive up to Yosemite.

I can recall, with crystal clarity hearing songs while sitting in my RV and staring at the sight before me of the meadow and Yosemite Falls crashing down across the Valley outside my driver's window. I can still hear the thundering falls, smell the fresh grasses and growth in the Valley floor, and hear Pink Floyd "PULSE" live cd's in the background, thundering from my Boom-Box (since my RV stereo can't play CDs). The whole experience was surreal, the music and the scenery, the knowledge of where I was and how magical the location is, all combined to make it a magical experience. I only wish I had someone to share it with at that time. It was INCREDIBLY POWERFUL, a spiritual experience. And no, I hadn't taken anything stronger than an aspirin - which made the experience that much more impressive. It was a convergence of auditory and visual stimulus unlike anything else I'd ever experienced before (or since), and it now has me chasing that experience almost like a drug high, but it was all internal - so my search is now within myself.

Sometimes getting a song stuck inside your head CAN be beneficial. Which is why I can identify an "earworm" as being disruptive, whereas simply having a song stuck in your head as a nuisance. An "earworm" is more malicious, IMHO. Not only can't you get it out of your head, but it's also not something you find pleasant/or want to hear. IMHO

Although released in 1995, I didn't pick it up until 1999/2000 or thereabouts. It's one of my more cherished albums and one I will forever tie to driving in Yosemite Valley. It was simply an incredibly powerful positive experience, and I wish I could share it with all of you. It was a mind-and-emotional experience like none I'd ever had before (nor since), and no medications/drugs/meditation could ever compare to it. It was an INCREDIBLE natural high which I wish I could share with the rest of you. It was so powerful I would LOVE to be able to share it with everyone I know.

I just wish I could find that feeling again and be able to share with my wonderful wife, so we could share it together.

Best drive of my life, thus far, was FD*, driving us, at rather silly speeds, with the top down, at night, to Howlin' Wolf...

Earworms?

I remember about 8 years ago Hugh Hewitt had his producer ride the "It's a Small World" ride at Disneyland for the length of the show's broadcast. He went through the ride about ten times, I think. There's no way the poor guy was ever the same after that. After reading the lyrics to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" song, I'm waiting for the Navy to deploy Team Two to Disneyland for pirate eradication.
Remember, folks, you can't spell "douche" without "Che."
