Regarding having a patrol car visible from the front door - when we went to serve arrest warrants or even talk to suspects when we thought we might get an arrest out of it, we NEVER parked where they could see our cars from the front door and/or windows. We didn't want to give them any warning that we were there until we were at the door.
Calling 911 to verify that they're really cops is going to be real difficult to verify unless they're the same agency answering the 911 call as the ones at the door. If you do call 911 to verify, make sure you get transferred to the same agency as the ones at the door.
Now that so many departments don't wear regular distinctive uniforms with patches and badges and have gone to wearing raid jackets with POLICE stenciled on them makes it REALLY EASY to impersonate cops and is a REAL problem - and will continue to be so until they go back to using distinctive uniforms again and drop the mall ninja crap except when it's REALLY needed.
