We can tell him the killing was commendable, but he has to believe it himself.
If the woman recognizes he killed to defend her, and she could not have appealed to the deceased choirboy's better nature and come out as uninjured as she did, it will be easier for him to believe.

What's the smallest one-handed crossbow one could make that would still launch a bolt with lethal effect?
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .
