But yeah, the aliens do make less sense the more you try to make sense of them.
Explanation:
As monsters, they are quite well done, but fail to sell themselves as having the kind of ruthless intelligence that would enable them to launch an interstellar campaign of strip-mining conquest. The two biggest failing points are:
A) at no point do the aliens do anything that can really be described as outwitting the good guys; they take advantage of superior technology but they don't employ anything approaching sophisticated tactics. No ambushes, no bribing the locals, no feints, bluffs, or decoys of any kind.
B) Really, you would think they'd be better prepared for the attack on their base. In the end, they do very well as monsters, but they're horrible aliens.
So they're pretty much like Posleen in Ringo's Gust Front were at first?

It's a fun summer, don't expect much, just enjoy yourself and the A/C, picture. Just leave your disbelief at the front door, get a discount ticket coupon and sneak in a couple sodas and your favorite nibbles.

In another time and place you'd be loving with your honey at the drive in. It's not deep. It's just for fun.

So you're saying it's a GREAT drive-in movie???? 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) Perhaps as in, 'don't watch the movie, just DRIVE ON! (or DRIVE IN! - depending on how hot you get).'

The steampunk aspect is fun, but it has Olivia "my eyes were glued to my face at birth" Wilde in it, who's also a raving lefty-bat.

Maybe they were union drone aliens and their bosses had the good sense to say at home.

FWIW, The graphic novel (comicbook?) that spawned the movie may be (or is) available through your public library, The El Paso Library even has an e-book version.

Hey, it had lots & lots of antique guns. And aliens. And stuff blowing up. It's called "Cowboys vs. Aliens" for a reason, and it delivers exactly what it says on the tin. "Dr. Zhivago" it ain't, but it was well worth the price of a weekday matinee ticket.
