"beater" S&Ws can be pretty cheap - police auctions are a good source for ones w. bad cosmetics, but decent internals. Especially the bigger ones, at least in my experience.

Pump shotguns, used, are usually 150-200.

OK, let's bring this back on track...
I just don't know if I could trust my life to a Nagant revolver, since it's main use seemed to be shooting political dissidents in the back of the head.
We're talking about a hypothetical person or family that has very limited means. Refer to original post.
ETA: The simple solution is to carry in your own house.
Yeah, but they caught this guy completely unawares. For the sake of the scenario, you've been jumped from behind, tied up, beaten, and confined to the basement or some other secure area of your house. Hence, the original idea of hiding various firearms all around the house.
I rather like the original idea, but it may not be so practical here in Jersey.
Don't get me started. Move to a free state, brother. Absent that, better to be judged by 12, etc...

shotguns can be tougher to hide than handguns. What are some cheap, reliable .357 revolvers that ya'll recommend? Preferably in 4" barrel lengths...

Well, remember the Rough Rider .22LR I mentioned in the original post? They also make a .357. Go to the Heritage Arms website.

hmmm...MSRP is $500. For that much, I can get a DA Ruger GP-100...not exactly cheap enough to sprinkle around the house like carpet freshener.

Didn't know the big boomers were that spendy. The small ones are under $200. Sorry...

I've never shot a Nagant revolver but it sounds like a good idea. Does anybody know the reliability?

The Hi Points are cheaper then I expected, but I know one person who had one and he had issues with it. Hi Point fixed the pistol, but I wouldn't want to rely on it.

I'm all for the Nagant idea.

According to this, they are built like a tank. I know I would trust my life to mine. I only wish it fired a larger caliber.

Hmmmm. Ballistics similar to a .32 Magnum? Yeah, if that is what "affordable" means when hiding arms in rec rooms, basements, bathrooms and such areas. Protection at half the cost. Yeah, it works for me.

If, it's what I can afford now, versus what I can afford later, you have to judge how serious is the threat now versus later.

Better than nothing if you need it now.

When Nagants were issued to a Red Army unit, the first priority was to establish each weapon's point of impact. For revolvers that were to be issued to regular soldiers specially selected marksmen generally conducted the firing. In the case of Nagants issued to officers and NCOs, those to whom the particular gun was given did the firing.

Four shots were fired in single action mode, either offhand or from a rest at a range of 25 meters. It was expected that the resulting group measure no more than six inches in diameter, and be no further than two inches from the point of aim in any direction. The firing range commands seemed designed to prepare the soldier for the worst eventualities he might face. "AT THE DESERTER, FIRE!" was typical.
