Hooray for the big brown truck of happiness! Chrono goodness

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

I found a relatively inexpensive dry box that fit everything into it with a little room left over for a reloading notebook. Hopefully I'll be able to make it through tomorrow without shooting my chronometer.

So, after all these months I finally got to test out my chronograph.

I'll need to bring an extension cord with me. The indoor lights need something better than a car battery jumper pack for electricity. However, under a bright incandescent light I got some great readings. I also found out that someone who is also shooting next to you will cause errors every time he pulls the trigger.

I set the chronometer out at 7 yards and the target at 10 yards. Then to ensure it was set properly, I grabbed my laser boresighter and checked to make sure my natural point of aim was well inside the skyscreens. Thus emboldened with the idea that I wouldn't shoot my chronograph on its first day out, I proceeded to learn to use the thing, firing a lot of Remington bulk .22LR. I got a lot of error messages since the floodlight wasn't perfectly aimed at the chronograph, but I got enough to know how to run through its functions, how to set the printer up and use it and the like.

I also got some really good velocities out of my handloaded .40 S&W.

Test gun was an STI Trojan with 5.0" barrel.

180-grain copper-plated/TMJ from HSM/Midway over 5.0 grains of Universal went around 1045fps average. According to Hogdon I'd get 950fps out of a 4.0" barrel.

180-grain copper-plated/TMJ from HSM/Midway over 5.6 grains of Universal went around 1096fps. I think their maximum load of 5.8 grains would reach about 1120 to 1140fps out of my barrel. Not bad, but as always, we can do better.

I can't wait to try out the 180-grain XTP over 7.0grains of Longshot through the chronograph and see what I get for their speeds. They're saying 1009fps for 6.5 grains of Longshot out of a 4" barrel, so my guess is I'll easily get over 1100fps out of my STI. With a max load of 8.0 grains, I could be getting very close to 10mm velocities. That ought to be some fun.
