I kid you not, that's what they were claiming, and not one reporter called BS... :(

Of course it was Jesse MacBeth types. I checked out a few of them, and it was basically guys that had actually been in the military, but decided to desert because they didn't like it, and no one really missed them when they did. Then the antiwar circuit grabbed them and sent them on a tour, and told them what to say.
For a no good loser, that's a pretty good meal ticket. Get sent around the world, be the center of attention for a lot of media, and be hailed as a hero for your "moral decision".

In a simpler time they'd have been stood against a wall and shot. I guess I lack nuance.

I actually told the recruiter this when I tried to join(couldn't make weight), after he saw my adsvab score and suggested I look into either a medical or technical MOS.

Yeah, when your ASVAB is 97 (not my fault, I was hung over from my first beer experience the night before) they seem a little resistant to letting you do anything fun.

Pot must make one smarter, at least back then. My ASVAB was 155...still nothing fun!

Huh? Max score on the ASVAB was 99 when I took it.
