Yugoslav Mauser M24/47 Refinish Project

Post by workinwifdakids »

Quite some time ago, there was a Yugoslav Mauser M24/47 on sale at Big 5 for $99. I didn't even know what a Mauser was at the time, but I already had a Mosin Nagant. What else does Big 5 ever have on sale? So, what the hell - I bought it.

And then I completely screwed it up.

The bluing was faded very badly, and silver was breaking through everywhere, but the rifling was strong and sharp. I thought, "Maybe this would be a good rifle for that Duracoat stuff."
:o
Oh yes I did.
I smoked more cigarettes, got more heartburn, did more cussing, and drank more Scotch trying to Duracoat that rifle than I have in my whole life. All I did was make it look like a 12-year-old went to town on it with Krylon during a humid streak, and the stuff just scratched right off.

Well, it sat out in my garage drawing my wrath and dirty looks for the better part of a year, I suppose. Finally, my dad gave me some cash for my birthday, and I decided that was it. I sent that rifle out to be reblued. It came back last night, and it looks like it must have when it came off the assembly line. Sharp, deep, rich... ahh! What a beautiful rifle! My heart just soared when I saw it. Tool marks? Well, sure! It's a battle rifle, after all, and a C&R at that. But it looks absolutely incredible.

Finally! Oh, and why no pictures? Because in about a week, I'm sending off the stock to be refinished. Then you will have pictures!
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Hear, hear! always glad to hear when projects escape the impasse that invariably comes to them. With any luck I will be able to show my refinished K-31 with beech stock ( my impasse is I misplaced the shellac).

Looking forward to seeing the results, as the Mauser 24/47 is on my list of admired bolt actions I'd like to have someday (Draven's seen the list a few years back but I've gotten more wants since then) :)
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .

I've got two of them that I picked up at Big Five when they went on sale.

I boiled the bolt to get the cosmoline out and stank up the whole house.
The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.
