I'm a gunsmith!

Post by Catbird »

No, not really.

I was at Sportsman's Warehouse last weekend and spied a Hogue overmolded stock for the Ruger 10/22. I have a 10/22 with a wire folding stock.

It jammed like crazy the last time I fired it, at least 2 years ago. It's been sitting in my closet ever since. Now seemed like a good time to fix it. I googled up a website with disassembly instructions, took it apart, and cleaned it real well.

I tried fitting the receiver into the new stock and it just wouldn't click into place. I looked into the receiver well in the stock and saw where it was rubbing.

It seemed unlikely that I should need to grind away the plastic for clearance, so I gave in and looked at the package for directions. :x The package showed that the stock in question was made for the bull barrel model. :x :x Well, shoot. Now I have to drive all the way back down to Federal Way.

I went a couple of days later, combining a trip with some errands. I exchanged it for the correct model stock and took everything apart again when I got home from work that night. I tried to fit the receiver into the new stock and... the same thing happened! :x :x :x

I thought it might be easier to see what was going wrong if I fit the trigger group by itself. The trigger assembly removes easily by pushing out two pins, so I took it apart,

and placed it into the stock.

It turns out that it just needs to be hooked at the back and rotated down into position. I put the trigger back into the receiver and wiggled it into the stock. Voila!

It looks and feels much better. I'm looking forward to trying it out.
The only problem now is the crappy looking paint flaking off the receiver and barrel. If anyone knows a decent DIY refinishing method for this rifle, I would appreciate hearing it!

Awesome! Diagnose problem. Fix problem. You're not a gunsmith; you're a GOD!!!! Congratulations.

Have you cut yourself yet? Your not a member of the WECSOG until you cut yourself and bleed all over a gun.

Do you want it to look nice? or just not look like crap? this is an important distinction.
If you are unwilling to give another man freedom in his life, do not expect to have it in your own.
It surely beats trying to figure out what the metrosexuals want ( a good hard kick in the nuts in my opinion, but that won't sell ice cream :D )- Highspeed

No, but I knocked a couple of burrs off the scope rail before they had a chance to get me.

I just want it to not look like crap. I had considered touching up the flaked areas with Testor's modeling enamel, but that would look worse close up. I could have it bead blasted and anodized, but that would probably cost five times what I've spent on it already.

I was hoping there was a cheap and clever method of stripping the old paint, and then a reasonably durable spray-on coating. The whole thing should cost less than a new gun, (approx. $250), or make it look significantly better than a new one, otherwise it's not worth the trouble.

Anodize? Is it aluminum? Not much will stick to aluminum except epoxy enamel, and you still have to prep it well. You can buy spray epoxy enamels, I believe. Get it powder coated, that sticks too, but ya still gotta prep it.

Most useful.

All of these video's have good points and are well worth watching.
I'd use the Aluma-Hyde, part #083-002-012, matte black. It's works well and matches the Ruger finish closely.

And it ain't TRUE "WECSOG" unless you use a Moto-Tool and bleed on the gun.
