One year, my young daughter came home from a white elephant party with a chicken. We live in town. No fence. I immediately named him Stewie. I googled easy ways to kill a chicken, not having a kill cone handy. My daughter isn't squeamish, so we tried the recommended, "hold him upside down by his feet while someone else knocks his head off with a bat" method. She tried, but she's no Babe Ruth. I ended up just holding him under my arm and breaking his neck. Probably should have started with that.

He was delicious.
I like to grab the head and spin the neck and body for a quickie. I like the idea of a safety cone though....

I think it depends on the method - the ive seen on youtube that seems to work best is to insert live chicken upside down into said kill cone, then slitting the birds neck.

tie feet together, tie other side of rope to a 2x4 4-5 feet of the ground. allow them to hang for 5 minutes or so. They calm down and a sharp knife, slit half to all the way through neck. Walk away. come back in 3-4 minutes. mess cleans up off the grass. No big deal.

That's what I always did with injured upland game birds. Worked great. I just didn't think of it with a chicken for some reason.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

As a falconer, I dispatch a lot of small game and I can't use a blade for fear of the hawk grabbing it and slicing up their feet. After awhile you tend to get really good at breaking necks. Bird necks are especially stretchy though. My preference is to grab the feet, step on the head, and yank up.

According to my dad, if you broke a chicken's neck like my little bitty g'grandma you didn't need a blade to bleed the bird.

Serious wrist whip action. Usually popped the head clean off. Mad skilz from a wee lady.

That leaves blood in the bird, just like if you use a hatchet to cut their head off.

It has been wonderfully boring here. Our agency was deemed essential enough to work from home. So far, everything office-related has been great. I got a couple of projects done with my XD and my Rossi 92 while taking calls. I DuraCoated them both in matte black and put Advantage Tactical Sights on the XD so I have a better low-viz option with it. Next time I do any kind of coating, I want to find something I can use with an airbrush instead of a spray can. I can get thinner coats that way.

And then while reassembling my 92, the ejector spring collar decided to go off on a magical journey across my basement to parts unknown. I can't even find it with a magnet sweeper so I think it wound up in the sump pit. So that, new sights and a new magazine follower all on their way from Steve's Gunz. I think I might spend a little extra and get a set of furniture for it from Boyd's. There's a green painted stock and handguard that are just about the same color as the old Model 601 M-16 furniture. I think that'd look decent on a flat black lever gun.

My AR projects are still going slow. I found out Rock River Arms likes to use red Loctite on their lower receiver extensions instead of staking the castle nut. The makes switching to a milspec extension a tad more difficult. There's a few videos I've seen on Youtube where people have melted red Loctite away with CRC Brakleen. Does anyone have any experience doing similar? I really don't want to take a blowtorch to my lower.

My food situation has been fine, too, though most of my backup rations consisted of peanut butter, Chef Boyardee canned foods and ramen with bacon and peppers. It's like college all over again.

My experience is that you'll find that part after you receive and install the new ones. By stepping on it. Barefoot.

Soldering iron, or Soldering gun, whichever you have thats higher wattage. Touch it to metal as close to the locktite as possible. Considering its the castle nut, you may have to take your time and work your way around the nut with multiple applications.
