Took the MIL shooting

Post by Weetabix »

My mother in law tends to be a knee-jerk liberal. Whenever the kids start decrying liberal issues around the table or the living room, she gets a grim, disapproving, "you're all wrong" look on her face. That makes my wife uncomfortable, and she makes "stop it" gestures to whomever can see her.

The MIL has been on a long trip around the country, and she stops at our place frequently. I think I'm going to try to convert her. At least on guns.

So, Saturday, I got a wild hair to go to the range. I invited her, my daughter and daughter's friend to go. Daughter's friend is a CCW holder who was over to discuss some unhappy personal issues with my daughter. I figured they could use a break from unhappiness.

I took two 10/22's for myself and the MIL. We were at an indoor range limited to 25 yards. I also took a pile of ammo that I knew daughter and friend would be shooting.

The MIL said her experience with guns was very limited. A couple of shoots with her ex when he was in the military. A time or two with my brother in law. I figured a 10/22 was pretty unintimidating.

She shot pretty well. She was shooting at 10 and 15 yards. She's 75, so arm strength was a limiting factor on endurance. I had open sights and a scope available. I'm not sure which she preferred. Her groups tightened up when I showed her how to use a hasty sling and suggested she lean her shoulder against the partition.

She said she had fun, so when she's back in May for graduations, I plan to take her to shoot handguns. I have a Ruger Mark II and a CZ27 (.32 cal) that I think should not raise recoil issues.

Maybe I'll convert her yet.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

Well played sir. Slow, steady as the opportunity presents itself and always with a smile and good humor.

Definitely a battle worth fighting, as she'll hopefully spread that gospel to her otherwise liberal friends that I'm sure she clucks with...
