Not bad, overall a good mix. We should put together a mahogany brass pipe band!

Ditto. Trumpet, Baritone, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba... I was a drummer in HS bands, we used to play in church, we even won a few "talent competitions" back in the day...Fivetoes wrote:I played brass instruments in school band. I would probably pass out if I tried it now.
I played harmonicas and sang for many years and was "front man" in various bands for half my life up to ~10 years ago. Played some basic "power" and "bar-chords" on guitars to fill in behind a real guitarist during solos, etc. I can't call myself anything close to a "guitarist" but I used to fake it pretty well with power and bar-chords so long as I could "hide" amongst the real musicians... For some reason I never could figure out how to "play" (using the term in its widest possible connotation) and sing at the same time - I struggle to walk and chew gum.

Funny this comes up today - I stumbled over my harp-case in the closet yesterday... It's a damn shame that I've let myself get so out of shape. If I ever manage to get my life back in order I'd really love to make some music again... Those who have been there will understand when I say there's just nothing else like finding that "groove" - when the audience is involved and things are rolling... "Magical" isn't really a good enough word for that feeling.
DAMN I miss that.

French horn, in high school and college. I still remember the fingerings but I doubt I'd get more than nasty blattings out of it now.

Trombone, marching baritone, and euphonium back in high school.
I find myself listening to music I've never played and tapping out the fingerings. Pretty accurately based on some of the hymns I've checked myself against recently.
Couldn't actually play an instrument now days to save my life though.

Cello, still pretty comfortable in public with it. Some piano, though the formal training for that stopped when cello started. Can play recorder, too.
Oh, and I sing.

It's a "blues thing" - most blues men tend to alternate sing/play/sing/play...Dub_James wrote:Apparently BB King has the same issue. For some reason I never could figure out how to "play" (using the term in its widest possible connotation) and sing at the same time - I struggle to walk and chew gum.![]()
Most guitarists actually have some trouble with this - if you pay attention to most live performances you'll hear how they tend to adjust their vocal timing to match what they're playing. Those who can prevent it are exceptional... Studio recordings (non-blues) don't usually sound this way because the vocals and guitar tracks are recorded separately...

Ah, the happy memories... I had a certain weakness for flautists, even before Alyson Hannigan.Dedicated_Dad wrote:Sorry - I just can't resist...

Celli are great for two reasons:jetfxr69 wrote:Cello, still pretty comfortable in public with it.
i) All those Bach sonatas and etudes sound cool on euphonium; and,
ii) they burn longer and give more heat than violins.
Don't worry, that's all anybody gets out of those funny roundy horns, anywayRich Jordan wrote:French horn ... I doubt I'd get more than nasty blattings out of it now.
