NEW YORK — Investigators say neighbors waited more than a half hour to call police after hearing a woman's screams for help as she was being stabbed to death at a New York City apartment.

Police found 21-year-old Ebony Garcia lying in a pool of blood at about 2:10 a.m Saturday. She was stabbed about a dozen times and died two hours later at a local hospital.

Witnesses say neighbors ignored the woman's screams for more than 30 minutes before someone called the police. One neighbor says she ignored the cries because she thought the victim had been drinking.

Police want to question Garcia's boyfriend. She had obtained a restraining order against him.
lotta good the neighbors, the cops and that restraining order did... too bad people in NYC arent considered responsible enough to own a gun.

It's all been said before.

Call for a cop, call for an ambulance and call for a pizza. See who shows up first.

I guess Ebony Garcia will be the new name for those who don't remember Kitty Genovese.

So, she ignored cries for help for over 30 minutes because she thought the woman had been drinking - based on what??? Even if she had been drinking, and she's been screaming for help for only 5 minutes, wouldn't you think screaming for help for 5 minutes should get SOMEONE to call the police???

Probably safe to assume this didn't happen in the Upper East Side area of Manhattan. Many, many moons ago I used to work doing deliveries to some of the sh&*iest sections of NYC. Suffice it to say, an atomic bomb would have to go off in these areas for a resident to call the popo.

There's been a few situations -including one similar to this and Kitty Genovese'- that have made me respond. A few months back I awoke at 3AM to some woman screaming "He's trying to kill me!" I was on the phone to 911 in a minute, and I have the feeling because of the operator's tone that I wasn't the first to call. I even loaded up my shotgun and was about to grab the first aid kit when I thought "should I really go out there?" I didn't know what kind of danger was out there. And plus going out armed might be a bad idea if the cops see me rendering assistance. Luckily the cops did find the lady and I guess they helped her. Since then, the instinct to NOT be like those folks who ignored Kitty Genovese has moved me to render assistance. Luckily those times have only been to help a stranded motorist, but I really don't want to read in the paper that someone died and for me to realize "I could've helped her". Even so, I wonder if there's anything I could've done for that lady screaming at 3AM, or was calling the cops enough.
