AR Mags

Post by First Shirt »

Having had an on-again/off-again relationship with the EBR over the years, I've pretty much gotten used to dealing with whatever magazines come to hand. If they work, great, if not, I'll give them to somebody I don't like.

But now I've got what is probably gonna be my last black rifle, and realizing that magazines are expendable items, I'd like to be able to keep it fed.

Anybody have any recommendations for manufacturers, or any particular ones to avoid?

TIA.

Plus one on the Pmags....never had an issue with them, although my round count through them is admittedly under 1K.

My round count with P Mags is zero (for now...) but I still pick up 2 Gen 3 30 rnd mags every payday.

The P-mags are fine but also consider good quality USGI mags. Gun tests just did a big test of different AR mags and found that both were really the only ones to consider buying. Brownells USGI mags can be had for about $10 so that's the route I would go.

Over the years, I've had a number of USGI contract mags find their way into my collection. All of them work fine.

I had some Orlite mags that I got from some Canadians when we trained with them at Ft. Drum. I didn't like them that much.

Most recent purchases were Brownells USGI contract mags for about $10 each. They are good.

I haven't gotten any PMAGs. Here's a review that says aluminum beats plastic: http://www.accurateshooter.com/gear-rev ... ture-test/

I haven't bought any of the $40 HK steel AR mags. Botach has a sale on Israeli made steel mags: http://www.botach.com/products/e-lander ... owers.html

Here's a review. Some good, some bad: https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_400/238 ... _Out_.html

G-Mags (or OA-mags) are popular around here, they seem to seat and lock in place better than P-mags. Maybe not a popular opinion, since they seem to be pretty much a copy of P-mags (Oberland calls it "a tribute"). They're not sold in the US, for obvious reasons.

I've started to really like Lancer L5 AWM magazines. Polymer body with steel feed lips. They're skinnier than PMAGs, so they fit in pouches better. You can get translucent ones, and they pass some of the tests that PMAGs fail. Not that I'm planning on falling 8 feet onto my mags in -40 degree weather. Any magazine with a good anti-tilt follower will serve you well.

+1. I bought a bunch for my M4 in A'stan and it went from a jam-o-matic to reasonable reliability (never fired in anger - but still).

I still have them and they do well in my M4gery.

Everybody I know (meself included) uses P-Mags. If they're using something else, they ain't saying what. We buy 'em $50/5 at Q.T.
