An awful desire

Post by JAG2955 »

Apparently I have gotten some kind of brain wasting disease, because all I can think about doing right now is buying this and somehow attaching it to this simply so I can attach this and this.

Anyone with a good idea of how to do it, or should I just go back to drinking beer and leave the mutilation of AR-15s to someone else?

Channeling our inner Mad Mike, are we??? IIRC, somewhere in Skippy's List, there's something about attaching a Zouave bayonet to an M-16. As I recall, it was one of those "don't do this" things.

Calm down. I plan on being up there in late May, I'll buy you a beer! Just don't get arrested between now and then!!

I've got a StGw 57 bayo on my SIG 556. I like it better than the StGw 90 bayo. It's lighter and longer.

I'd sell the AR15 and buy a SIG 556 (better rifle, anyway). Then mount the StGw 57 bayo.

I'd also steer clear of LTC as they are a bit flaky: https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/p ... ategory=10

I've had some friends order stuff from LTC and get it. Other friends ordered stuff and never received anything. Calls to customer support were answered by "owner is deciding if he wants to ship it". WTF? Then why put it on the website and take the CC?

For really bizarre customer service, you don't get an email or phone call if "owner decides not to ship it", the stuff just never shows up. I believe the charges did reverse on the CCs, so at least theft wasn't involved.

That is an awful desire. You should be lusting after an HK if you have a German rifle think going.

A German rifle? Ridiculous! What kind of person would buy a rifle just because you can put a bayonet on it? I've only done that [strike]twice once[/strike] uh, never!

I did see an HK91 (Real HK) for $4500 last time I was in PA. Didn't strike my fancy, until I learned that one full-auto trigger pack can go across platforms, assuming all are stamped.

But seriously, hack off the NATO lug, weld on a piece of round stock with a hole in it, and attach the lug. It should work, right? Of course, I'd have to buy a new upper to try it on...

If you want to put a bayo on your AR-15, the M7 is about as good as it gets. Light, fast and sharp. Almost the same profile as the StGw 57 bayo, just a little shorter and lighter.

This is what was issued to me: http://www.amazon.com/Ontario-Knife-Bay ... B001B6X17G

A few years later, Phrobis [strike]bribed[/strike] contributed to a congressman, and got a contract for the M9 bayonet. "Oh goody!" said I "a combination survival knife and bayonet, with wire cutter to boot!" So I went and spent almost $200 of my hard earned USGI salary on one: http://www.amazon.com/Ontario-490-Bayon ... B000Q9F7LM . I think mine might even be marked "Phrobis" I got it so long ago.

I discovered that it was much heavier on the end of my M16. Heavier meant slower, which means it will get me killed in combat. Also, it didn't have the nice slim point that does such a good job in bayonet drills. It was also heavier to carry. I stopped carrying it, and went back to the M7. The M9 went into the knife drawer. That's one of the drawers in an old file cabinet that also has my holster drawer. Both drawers are full.

Oh yeah, the survival knife. Yes, like everyone else here, I watched "[strike]Old Yeller[/strike]" "Rambo". Funny thing, when I went to SERE school, the knife I brought was some 4" fixed blade knife (probably a Buck - it was so long ago, I forget). No one, not even our instructors, had a Rambo knife. One had a Mora knife. I was so impressed, I started carrying one of those: http://www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Companio ... B004TNWD40 They've gone up in price. I think I paid about $5 for mine. It also weighs next to nothing.

A few years ago, one of the guys on a hunting trip was a young guy just back from Afghanistan. He said everyone carried TOPS knives, and the one he liked was the Steel Eagle, a big Rambo-style survival knife. He said they were indestructible. I drank the kool-aid and bought one: http://www.amazon.com/Tops-Steel-Eagle- ... B005MKN4PG

It might be indestructible, but it is also really heavy, like almost as heavy as my axe. I carried it on one hunting trip, and found I never reached for it in a week. It is now added to the pile in my knife drawer.

If I'm going to carry something as heavy as an axe, I'll carry an axe. My axe goes with me on pretty much every camping and hunting trip: http://www.amazon.com/Gransfors-Bruks-H ... utdoor+axe

The axe is a lot more useful for the same weight. Can I do the "Rambo" thing and jam my axe or my M7 bayo into a crack in a rock cliff and pull myself up? No, but I don't think I could do that even if I had the TOPS knife with me.

Oh yeah, the wire cutters. I tried using the M9 bayo to cut concertina. Not good. I almost lost my fingers. Besides, the blade is SS, so it's not as hard as the carbon steel wire. The blade got dents, the wire finally got cut, and I kept my fingers (barely).

Somewhere along the way, I acquired a couple pair of French Army wire cutters. They have hardened steel jaws and work pretty well, plus they have plier jaws for twisting wire. I can't seem to find them for sale, so you are out of luck. They don't work as well as the US Army wire cutters: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/u ... x?a=545690 , but they weigh less than half as much - maybe even a quarter as much, and they have the plier jaws. Keep your eye out for them.

So anyway, my cutting things I always have with me in the field:
M7 bayo (if I have my AR 15): about 1/2 pound
Mora knife: about 4 oz
EDC folder: about 6 oz
wire cutters: about 6 oz
flex wire saw (great for cutting pelvis and sternum): about 2 oz
Havalon knife (good for caping): about 2 oz
Axe: about 1.5 pounds

I think the total price for everything is about the same as one of those Michigan knives, and that's including the stupid price I paid for the axe. You can get a decent axe for a quarter of the price and be way ahead of the game.

How about this?

Unless it's an extra or a backup, any survival knife that I'm going to carry has to be a full tang with a fixed blade.

You need the full tang if you're using it for chopping or prying, both things that are not good to do with a knife.

The BK2 is a good knife, but it weighs a pound. You could carry a hatchet or tomahawk and a Mora knife for that weight. Two tools that would do a better job for their respective tasks than a single dual purpose tool.

If I was on some TV survivor show, and the rules were only one knife, I'd go the extra 6oz over the BK2 and get the TOPS Steel Eagle. It has a 7" blade with a full tang of 1/4" steel with the saw back. It also has two lanyard holes, so you can do the "Rambo" thing and make a spear. Don't get me wrong. It is a great knife. It really is indestructible, just heavy.

If I was as young and as in good shape as the kid from Afghanistan, maybe I'd carry a TOPS Steel Eagle or K-BAR BK2 instead of the Mora for my fixed blade knife, but I'm liking lighter stuff as I get older.

Good grief. This is one thread that makes me glad I bought AKs. My bayonets have the same features, and cost about one tenth that. You put it on the end of your rifle and stab people with it. You aren't going to survive enough bayonet charges to wear out even a cheap combloc milsurp unit.
