Can someone explain unions to me?

The problem with most unions (and all of them in the US) is that they do not understand the most basic economics of the situation. You cannot pay someone more than the worth of the value added that they give to the product/service and stay in business. So you can be for high wages or you can be against efficiency (i.e for featherbeding) but if you promote both you are on the road to ruin.
