Gun bans in Ireland

Post by mekender »

Civilian ownership of semi automatic pistols, such as the Glock, is to be banned under a new move by Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern.

There are currently 1,900 legally held handguns, up from a handful in 2004. The number of handgun licences has mushroomed in recent years, following successful court challenges by shooting groups.

Mr Ahern told the Dail last night that he would bring forward legislation to deal with the handguns issue.

A source close to the minister stressed today: "This is not a measure to tackle gangland crime. It's a totally separate issue.

"The Minister understands there is no connection between gangland crime and legally held handguns. But he is concerned about the proliferation of handguns in society. There are nearly 2,000 legally held handguns, and in a year's time there could be 5,000."

The ban will hit semi automatic pistols such as the Austrian made Glock, which has also featured in many gangland murders in Dublin and Limerick.

However, the source said there could be some room for exemption for "lower calibre" handguns used in Olympic sports, such as .22 pistols.
the guy even acknowledges that the bans wont affect crime and does it anyways... what an ass

1900 legally held handguns? Is that in one neighborhood? One small hamlet out in the boonies somewhere? Please don't tell me that that is for a major city or, God forbid, the entire country! And this nitwit is concerned about the "proliferation of firearms" in society! He is worried that after a year theere MAY BE as many as 5000! Just what sort of justice is this guy a minister of anyway?

And some folks wonder why I thank God that I live in America...sheesh.

The number handguns owned by members or the forum alone probably isn't too far short of the 1900 known to be in Ireland (empahsis on "known" as there are probably a few more over there amongst law abiding people)

The Minister understands there is no connection between gangland crime and legally held handguns.
As Mekender points out, no, the minister doesn't understand the connection -- despite the fact that the words came out of his own mouth.

Wow, that's .045% of the population that legally owns one handgun. Time to put a stop to it!

"The Minister understands there is no connection between gangland crime and legally held handguns. But he is concerned about the proliferation of handguns in society. There are nearly 2,000 legally held handguns, and in a year's time there could be 5,000."

in the part of the quote left out by the media. The minister continued on to say.

"With as many as 5,000 in a year and most likely another 15,000 by the end of the decade, the serf's may actually have enough ammunition and guns to take action against our corrupt and self appeasing political asses. Can't have anything like that. Time to ban the guns again. Hopefully this time we have sapped out their spare cash and last reserves of hope."

and for counting's sake. I have 6 and I'm a piker. I would guess our forum has at least 1900 1911's alone. Hell, we might have 1900 P3AT's/ LCP's.
