Domain usefulness opinion" algoreisms.com

Post by Rich Jordan »

Some years ago I bought a few domains that I thought would make good political blogsites; one was 'algoreisms.com' which was intended to hilight any faux pas, fall of winter wherever Mr. Global Warming travelled, etc. I actually had a wordpress site running and a few initial articles done and was going to make it live but then the usual happened; work got nutty, life got swamped, and it never got done. I no longer run a server (and no longer have the commercial grade DSL at home, trimmed to save money) so not likely to do it now even if we weren't once again in a cycle of work going insane and life getting swamped out again.

The domain is expiring in a couple of weeks. Al Gore is not really relevant these days (though the press and the d-machine may effect to make him so again).

Worth renewing? Anyone else have a use for it?

I would edit that to read "Al Gore is notably irrelevant these days."

But, no, I have all I can do running my life, my blog, and my archival site.

My opinion, it was a nice guess any/or try, but getting someone to fork over $100 for that domain is EXTREMELY questionable. OTOH, they might give you a price break on renewing it - and if it's only a couple bucks extra, I'd gamble the money and do it - if nothing else, I'd do it out of SPITE - to keep anyone else from grabbing it.

After all, you NEVER KNOW just what they might want to do with such a domain name. OR, you could just as easily evaluate it and decide that particular domain might not even be worth the $4 to keep it registered (particularly if no one has contacted you already about the domain - but; is your ownership info shadowed by your provider so no one can contact you about the domain?).

I would almost be tempted to hold onto it for another year with actual contact information (a throw-away email address and perhaps a TRAC phone number - or another number answered by a web service which can record voice-mail messages) - yes, I tend to be a little paranoid about my data being exposed.

You might be surprised, once you make your domain info public and accessible, you might get more offers than you had realized (some form the ANTI-GORE camps and the others from the PRO-GORE people). If you make it known you're willing to either keep or sell the domain depending on the price offered, you might get NOTHING or you might get a LOT of inquiries about the domain name's availability.

Bottom line = "It depends"!! :D :D :D

YMMV

The domain has been parked at the registrar and contact info is available; had I made it live I was going to transfer it and use an obfuscation service for the contact info. Never had any sign of interest. I'm frankly ok with giving it to someone if they have a use for it unless a great idea pops that makes it worth renewing. If it had value beyond reg fee someone would have nudged it by now.

I had plans for a number of domains; actually started two other mini-blogs and made them live, but after a couple of months just got crushed between work stuff and family stuff, so they moldered until I shut them down. Tried twice since to get one going, and its like a curse; shit starts falling each time.

I still think its a "brandable" name; you can say it, it has an understandable meaning to a reasonable English speaker about a well known figure. I'm just not the person who can make something of it and I'm at the beginning of a long term purging/trimming/cutting back on the excess of stuff I've collected over the last 30 years (guns and car NOT included ;).

I'm thinking that's the only domain that would have to be looked up on "WhoCares" rather than WhoIs.
