Linkarooni - as much as I hate to lose another R in the Senate, he needed to go.
Alaska Sen. Stevens concedes in re-election race

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens conceded defeat Wednesday in a re-election bid shadowed by his federal felony conviction, a bitter end to a four-decade career in which he held a commanding place in state politics and on some of the most influential congressional committees in Washington.

In an eight-sentence statement, the longest serving Republican in Senate history said not enough ballots remain uncounted for him to catch Democrat Mark Begich, who holds a 3,724-vote lead out of about 315,000 ballots cast.

I was hoping that he would win, then be forced to quit. Governor Sarah Palin would then have been obligated to appoint a successor.

sorry pal but the loss of his seat to the Democrats concerns us all... and since his actions caused it... he is an asswipe...

His failure to resign concerns us because it gave the Dems a seat in the Senate that they shouldn't have had. Say what you want about "Dollar" Bill Jefferson, but he hasn't been convicted yet. Stevens was. He should have stepped down and let someone else run for his seat.

Ted Stevens is a good man and the only mistake that he made was trusting somebody who he thought was a friend to take care of the work on his house while he was away in Washington, representing his constituents. Have you looked at his house? A number of local builders are on record as saying that even the $160,000 that he is known to have paid, was overpriced for the work that was done, let alone what the feds are claiming. Seriously, if he were corrupt, he would have to be the most incompetent corrupt politician in all of US history, given the penny-ante nature of the charges. And then you have the withholding of exculpatory evidence by the prosecution, and the predominantly black DC jury, rather than a jury of his peers from the state where the supposed crimes were committed. And don't forget the timing of the whole thing; which I firmly believe was concocted specifically to throw the election to the democrats.

But ignoring all of that, I am appalled at the vitriol and profanity directed at my fellow Alaskan who has spent his entire life serving his country and his state, before it was even a state. Particularly since it comes from people who most likely haven't followed the case, and don't have a clue other than what they have been spoon fed by the media. I know that many members of this forum have served their country with honor, but there is nobody here who even comes close to Ted's service. You don't have to like him, you can think that he should have stepped down, you can even think that he is guilty, but he has at least earned the right to have those things said about him in a respectful manner.

Finally, I dare you to come to Alaska and say some of the things about Ted that were said in this thread, and see how long you live.
