My first CO was huge into the whole coin thing. Except it was our squadron coin. He didn't care what else you had, just that you had the coin when we went to the O-club. If not, someone could challenge you, and you'd wind up buying them a drink. He was also the most best and most professional officer I ever met. Memorized my wife's name, my hobbies, and my background from day 1. I still keep the binder of his expectations on my desk.
Here's said coin in question. Rumor has it that the squadron asked Marvel Comics to use the Wolverine character on our official logo. They were all about it, said they'd supply the artwork gratis. But of course, the Corps has a thing against using a copyrighted image, so our real logo was mega-ghey.

Are you willing to share his expectations? I, for one, would be interested in knowing them. Glad you won the CO lottery. He sounds like a credit to the uniform.

I'll try to remember to scan his expectations when I'm at work and post them.

Re: MHI Challenge coins
The one that I treasure the most was given me by our Sergeant Major. He had a bunch made up to give to enlisted troops for exemplary performance and they were highly treasured by the soldiers. The officers wanted one, but the Sergeant Major was a tight-fisted sonofabitch with his coins. He didn't give them lightly to his soldiers, he damn sure wasn't giving any to the officers.
One day he flipped me one as I passed his office. "Here, sir. You earned this."
"Oh, no, Sergeant Major" I replied, "those are for the troops."
"That's exactly what I'm talking about, sir." he replied. "You put the troops first, and you're the best officer in this outfit. And, you're the only one who hasn't asked for a challenge coin. Screw those other sonsofbitches.

Well, Hood isn't really all that American, and challenge coins seem to be a unique thing for Americans and the French.Goods2010 wrote:Bad guys need challenge coins too. I'd love to see what kind of challenge coin Hood would give out... Stupid mollusk...
...ooh, I know. In order to get me to buy this, we need to have Larry write a backstory as to why challenge coins are A Thing for monster hunters.
