Mike, that would be great except the Wiki has been broken for some time (since the last upgrade IIRC) and unless there's been a change recently it's not accessible.308Mike wrote:Granted, I haven't looked, but if some of this was in the Wiki, then people could just point others to the Wiki

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

Sorry, I admit I haven't checked it in a LONG time, and that's why I'm ignorant about it's status. Thanks for the heads-up (and I also suffer from CRS, it's a memory problem - LOL!!).randy wrote:Mike, that would be great except the Wiki has been broken for some time (since the last upgrade IIRC) and unless there's been a change recently it's not accessible.308Mike wrote:Granted, I haven't looked, but if some of this was in the Wiki, then people could just point others to the Wiki
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.
I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

Re: The Big, Merged, Master Shaving Thread
Now I'm interested in the concepts of necroposting, new threads, and the "purpose" (if such is definable) of a forum vs. a wiki. I'm going to start a new thread for that discussion. I searched for old ones of that type of discussion, but my search-fu isn't strong, so I may have missed one.
Anyway, I'm going to call it: On necroposting, new threads, and the nature of a forum

Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

What's different about the Merkur razor as opposed to an old Gillette, or have you ever tried an old Gillette?Jered wrote:This Merkur

So far, the Astra blades are my favorite. They're inexpensive and remarkable consistent.

That razor holds the blade at an angle so it's pretty aggressive.Weetabix wrote:What's different about the Merkur razor as opposed to an old Gillette, or have you ever tried an old Gillette?Jered wrote:This Merkur

Re: The Big, Merged, Master Shaving Thread
This thread will never die!
I noticed over the last few weeks that my regular razor blades (Gillette Sensor Excel) are giving me fewer and fewer decent shaves. For years, I changed cartridges on Monday mornings, getting six or seven good shaves from one unit (depending on whether I shaved on both Saturday and Sunday). These days, I'm getting to Thursday, and having to change the cartridge. Boo hiss for Gillette!
No more, I decided. After reading this thread, I dusted off the credit card and ordered a classic double-edge safety razor handle and a badger-hair lather brush from Muehle, some Proraso sensitive pre-shave stuff and shaving soap, 100 Feather blades and a bottle of Old Spice (my father's aftershave). No more of Gillette's price tyranny for me.
'Range report' to follow. In the meantime, consider these shaving gems of wisdom:
Ow!
but...
Crabs?.

Re: The Big, Merged, Master Shaving Thread
Speaking of this and that:
Styptic Pencils: I needed mine today - there was actual dripping at the point I violated my skin's integrity. But the pencil worked quite well after I wetted it and applied it firmly for a few seconds.
Vintage After Shave Journey: I think I've decided I like Brut best with Clubman a close second. I didn't seem to care for Old Spice so I solicited my daughters' opinions. They thought it smelled like some kind of baked good. Aqua Velva Ice Blue - don't like either the smell or the cooling effect of the (I assume) menthol. I'm still up for trying others, but I haven't bought any new ones lately.
Razor Blades: I've been using Wilkinson Sword blades from Wally World. Mostly pretty good, but occasionally I get a lemon that won't give many shaves or that nicks me up. But they're cheap. I've been considering an Astra purchase from Amazon, but sloth has ruled to date. I also have some old blades from a junk store - they look to be vintage '50's. Still in the pack. Mostly they're too harsh, but the packaging is fun.
Shaving Soap: I had bought a package cup and soap, again from Wally World. Having used the soap up, I bought more. The new soap doesn't lather as well. It seems watery or something. Any good soap suggestions?
All in all, the safety razor shaving is much more enjoyable than the cartridge razor shaving. Maybe it's the exhilaration of knowing any shave could be my last.

Soap: I have used Palmolive in a toothpaste-type tube for years as my travel kit shaving soap, and have been very happy with it. I might get a bowl or stick of Palmolive to compare with the fancy Proraso stuff (which I have never tried).
There is an old traditional-style French soap brand, le petit marseillais that Mrs Denis buys at the supermarket for our bathrooms - I get surprisingly good lather and results whenever I use that as impromptu shaving soap if I've run out of canned foam. The liquid 'lavender' stuff even smells good!

I tried an Arko shaving stick. That think makes some thick lather.
I also got some Derby blades for Christmas. I like them.
