We've had this discussion before. If you have enough electricity, you can synthesize whatever hydrocarbons you need. Failing that, if you want to cut out the middle man... with compact sources of sufficiently large amounts of electricity, MHD propulsion suddenly becomes very attractive.Termite wrote:Fusion would be great for electrical generation, and perhaps even a space ship drive.
But what do ya'll plan to replace avgas/jet fuel with?

Meanwhile I'm not betting against oil/gas in my lifetime. Am holding on to my oil stocks, midstream pipeline stocks and think their relentlessly growing dividend stream will fuel my income well past the day they throw dirt in my face.
Doubled down on my BP position last week when the stock dropped huge on the news that they'll have to pay $3B less than expected on part of the Gulf spill settlement. Mr. Market is manic depressive -- occasionally I take advantage of him like that. After suspending their dividend (unnecessarily but to satisfy BHO's need for rose garden photo op) temporarily it's back north of 5% again -- and growing.

Where I'd like to see fusion or even thorium reactors employed, would be on a variation of the old Rickover plan.
His plan involved setting up big breeder reactors near the coasts. Then using the power to desalinize sea water then pump it into the interior. Water shortage is a problem that is heading toward us. There are places that it is more difficutl to frack because of a water shortage.

Fusion is unlikely, and we're now paying through the nose for rare earth elements from China because to mine it in the US, it's "contaminated" with Thorium.
LFTRs are existing technology, that's scalable. We should be building them everywhere, but...

Forget them. They're not the problem.
It's the likes of the Dept. of Energy, and various others that impede them.

You're missing the point. We elected a BANANA President. The BANANA's *own* the EPA.HTRN wrote:Forget them. They're not the problem.

President's come and go.
Beuracrats exist FOREVER. Basically, ever since 3mile island, the Dept. of Energy has been leery of any new reactor technology, beyond controls, etc..
