Pelican case alternative ?

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Pelican case alternative ?

Post by Highspeed »

I've been looking at pistol sized Pelican cases and man they are expensive, is there a cheaper alternative that is still of good quality ?

If there is, I haven't been able to find one...

I did get lucky some time ago at the gunshop and was given two of the little pelican cases that some kind of holosight was originally shipped in. The customer had had the sights mounted on his rifles, and didn't want the cases, so Mr Gunshop gave them to me. They're too small for anything but a tiny pistol, but I often transport a couple of boxes of hunting ammunition in them, in compliance with the stupid *ammunition must be transported in a separate locked container* rule.

Occasionally you can find Starlight cases with cosmetic blemishes for somewhat less than retail. That somewhat less might still be more than a Pelican at retail, but I ended up with a pistol case and 3 rifle case some time ago. Fantastic cases IMHO.

Watch Ebay. Sometimes you can get screaming deals

I bought a like new(looked unused) Pelican lap top case for $65 + $15 shipping. They retail for over $200.

SKB are great cases, probably on par with Pelican, but you're back to 90-150 bucks for a case.

BTW, anybody here have any direct experience with both, and which they felt was better?

call around the pawn shops. Some around here had nice gun cases with missing/broken latches. I called the manufacturer, and got 4 new latches for just shipping. Total price was about 25 bucks for a nice case.

Plano cases are generally regarded as the "budget" pelican cases. You can find a couple on amazon.uk

Plano, right...I'll look into that, cheers BW. The same Amazon link brought up a 5.11 soft case that looked pretty good.

I got spoiled by Pelican cases when I was dealing in night vision equipment. I didn't do much with civilian gear but I would always buy a secondhand ATN weaponsight if I could break even on it, because they came with a Pelican case. The ATN sights were pretty shitty but I could sell them on and retain the case. You know an optic is rubbish when the best thing about it is the case it comes in...

Really? ATN nightvision stuff is usually of the highest quality outside of the US and the PVS series. Did you get a get a Gen 1 night vision or Gen 2?
