I think it must have something to do with the fantasy world that gamers live in.

I'd be interested to hear what connotations a gamer thinks of when he self-identifies as a gamer. When two people meet for the first time and figure out that they're both gamers, what automatic assumptions do they make about each other?

And, don't say, "It's a gamer thing. You wouldn't understand." :)
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

I think it's so that instead of playing the solo missions versus the computer in a game you can play online with real people as your allies and enemies.

In practice though all these online games just fill up with irritating 10 year olds shouting " Pwned !! " and " Nooob !! " at the top of their squeaky pre-pubescent voices :D
